Hey there.
I'll go ahead and tell you that, my specs are...Well I'm not sure, my motherboard is an old ASUS B75M-A, this old hag has a Realtek sound chipset.
And I use these headphones made by a company called Astro, the name of the product is "A10".
I have OpenAL Soft installed, at least I am sure of it, I got OpenAL 2.1.0.0 or so from pcgamingwiki.
And I indeed have the latest TFix and T2Fix
So, on to business itself:
I would like to use the best possible audio in Thief, I thought the one I had was good enough, but been noticing some missing sounds and "discrepancies", like hearing footsteps left and right when it should be centered as I walk.
I've tried the "OpenAL32.dll" in T2Fix, it is good, but it makes ALL the voices sound so bad, so "mono" and lower quality.
And yet when I use the default OpenAL, I have the discrepancies.
What can I do to improve the sound?
Should I actually ditch OpenAL altogether, stop using EAX?
I do like how it sounds with the default OpenAL, just the damn left-and-right footsteps are very distracting.

Sometimes the left-right thing happens to me, particularly when I'm leaning against a door or similar. Does that happen to you too or is it radom? I haven't had the other issues. I had other issues when I tried to use headphones:

But never got around to try the solution that Microwave Oven recommended.

Nope, I have it set to Stereo and Headphones, so it should be fine and it pretty much is.
Surround on Headphones is terrible.

I too had sound problems with onboard sound. See this thread:
(

Maybe lowenz's tip at #5 might help? Or maybe something else suggested there?
I did not personally try the others beyond this as I found an explanation for my specific problem early on, but you might wish to give another suggestion a try if #5 doesn't help?

Nice thread Cigam, although I am unsure how to follow it.
Is Iowenz saying that I should set to 5.1, with the missing speakers unchecked, in Windows 10 Control Panel's "Sound"?
And to install OpenAL Soft, can't seem to find any manual how, also it has no "Releases". There was a link to the main website and it said that I should install by moving soft_oal to Windows/System32 and SysWOW64, so I did that.
Well, now I have 5.1 set in Windows Sounds, cam_ext uses OpenAL Soft, speakers value set to 6...
It's better, much better, but the voices are still a bit low quality and for some reason there is this very strong "Bass Echo" kind of effect now.
EDIT:
I did some changes using the OpenAL Soft frontend, such as disabling HRTF completely and switching quality from Linear to Cubic (though this difference is marginal)
Most importantly, I used "Realtek HD Audio Manager", which came with my Motherboard disk anyway, to switch from 5.1 back to "Stereo Headphones".
It's all a bit better now I'd say, no more bass (just a bit of leftover), the voice quality is nice enough but has some ting to it. I'm not sure, to be honest, dealing with OpenAL is such a bore.
Also it seems that Garrett's voice is still somewhat bad, commenting "snd_speaker_config 6" fixes some of that leftover bass and bad voice quality, but makes it worse on Garrett.
EDIT2:
OpenAL Soft frontend made no changes because I had an alsoft.ini on my THIEF2, well I changed it from there.
I think I got a much better sound now.
