Can anyone comment, please? I am in Mournhold and I'm doing the Royal Guard captain's quest- the one with discovering plot against Helseth. This involves incriminating the widow of King Llethan, and/or her household, and they are house Hlaalu- and so am I. I don't really want to do that, but if I don't, I might not get the other quests from the captain. Can I lie to Capt. Whatsisname and get the next quest, or do I need to betray my house in order to proceed?

There are some spoilers below, although I've tried to keep them as mild as possible....
The main Tribunal quest basically divides along two lines-the Palace/Helseth quests and the Temple/Almalexia quests. In each case you begin by doing quests for subordinates before eventually being asked to report directly to the head honcho-i.e. Helseth and Almalexia themselves. Interestingly, although the two plotlines intertwine and complement each other, you need only complete the Temple/Almalexia quests in order to finish the game. So the Palace quests aren't strictly necessary, but it'd be a shame to miss them out as they're a lot of fun and it's a short enough game as it is. As far as I know (might be wrong) you won't get to speak with Helseth face to face unless you do the Palace quests, and that
would be missing out, he's such a cute little elf-babe ;)
So you can stop short with the Captain's quests if you want and still finish Tribunal, but if you want to pursue that line of quests you will need to complete the conspiracy quest.
I wouldn't worry too much about betraying House Hlaalu; remember that Helseth himself is also a Hlaalu (the late King Llethan was his great Uncle, and if you meet him you'll see that his title is King Hlaalu Helseth) So the whole conspiracy thing is more like a case of infighting between different Hlaalu factions, IMO. In any case, there are no negative consequences for the royal widow herself. If you show the Captain the incriminating evidence you will be asked to dispose of three people. At this point, you do have the option of letting them leave town instead of killing them. You can then lie to Tienius and tell him they gave you the slip. I killed one of them, who seemed like a generally nasty piece of work, and let the other two go, and I got away with it no problem. Whether you'd get away with letting all three go, I'm not sure.
Whatever you choose to do, I'm sure it won't affect your rep. with House Hlaalu back on Vvardenfell.
Hope this helps!! :)
(Edit: looks like I was slightly mistaken about the Palace quests-you don't have to do any of the guard Captain's quests. as I said, but if you simply continue with the Temple quests you will eventually be directed Palace-wards to do Helseth's own quests. For more info see (

Thanks Jordy, you always seem to be the one to reply to my questions ;)
I did try to look on the UESP site before I posted the question, but for some reason it did not want to load properly and I couldn't wait! I noted also (when I looked at it before, keeping only to quests I'd done) that their walkthrough is not quite complete, fex in the 'Help the young woman find a husband' quest they do not give the grumpy shopkeeper option, only Fons Beren and the man who's lurking in either the Plaza or the Temple courtyard. I might mail them a correction/supplement.
Btw, Fons seems familiar. Was he in Morrowind?

No probs :) Oh and happy New Year as well!
UESP seems to have been having some problems lately but it should be running smoothly again now, although it can take a while to load....I also noticed that the Tribunal walkthrough is incomplete in some areas and slightly inaccurate in others, probably because they haven't had time to fine-tune it yet; I'm sure they'd appreciate any updates/corrections you have....
Hmm, Fons Beren....I'm pretty sure he's not in Morrowind. Maybe he reminds you of someone you know in real life? Tasty little morsel, indeed :grr:

Yes, a handsome Dunmer on one's arm would be pleasant, and high in coolness stakes. Those red eyes and pointy ears- mmm...
Happy New Year!

*grin* Like I said, be sure to check out Helseth when you get the chance....those nice people at BethSoft gave him a unique face so he looks different (and much cuter) than any other of the Dunmer men....shame about the ears tho... :erg:

And you can't steal his crown, damnit. It's pat of his head. The surgery to attach it must've been quite painful...
