Delete everything and anything that has the slightest reference to Quicktime. If you don't, it will start taking over your PNGs and shit.
YTMND is just a GIF with an embedded WAV or MP3, nothing your browser shouldn't be able to handle without QuickGay.

quicktime (now with a forced install of itunes :( )
(
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html) Not if you know where to look.
And I don't think that's neccesarily the case anymore, MM. The more recent ones have loading screens, which suggests something a bit more complicated than a gif with embedded sound.

YTMND is so yesterday it's unreal Scots
As Subjective Effect pointed out, I'm not acting like an internet thermometer (my previous comment was a joke) as to what's hot and new, I'm actually just inviting general discussion and the opportunity to provide random hilarity amongst TTLG. I know that to a lot of the IRC crew and to those who flirt with SA, a lot of this stuff is old news, and it's old news to me too but as you can see, there are plenty to whom this is A NEW THING™.

You'll find that was the introduction of (
http://ytmndflash.ytmnd.com/) Flash YTMNDs.

YTMND might fuck up my computer, crash firefox and only half have sounds(damn firefox plugins) but they're delicious. At first when they appeared on other forums I frequent 2 years ago I didn't like them much but after I gave them a chance(and watched the good ones, not the ones by amateurs) they're just hilarious. If they were more stable I'd spend every evening watching the newest 'fads' and laughing my ass off. The new flash YTMND with the loading bar are much more stable.
What are they about? I call them word of mouth.. by internet. Bill Cosby(whose YTMNDs I hate) gets so much attention for the plain fact there's something to talk about. His words and facial expressions are funny, and I bet people used to laugh about him on a friday night with the boys before the internet was mainstream. Others that get a lot of work are Conan O'Brien, especially when he does crazy stuff. It's free publicity, and I bet Conan is fully aware of YTMND and exploits it, word of mouth basically. Snakes of a Plane, Picard, you name it.
Now fads are just the latest bandwaggon that everyone jumps on. Elements of pop culture, or classic YTMNDs creep up in subsequent YTMNDs and that brings a smile to everyone's face. The purpose of the YTMND maker is to create a fad. A YTMND needs 3 things(the fundamentals!): Image, Sound, Text. They're easy and can be quite fun. If you're the kind of person to go on (
www.engrish.com) and laugh at the images(they're gold to anyone who hasn't tried) YTMND is the same thing.
A really funny one(depending on your knowledge of the site) is the "Cheer's" opening, but with everyone's face replaced by a classic YTMND character. Here's some of the popular characters.
Sean Connery - apparently he said the line "You're the man now dog" somewhere, maybe even a famous movie.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard - one of the earliest and classic YTMND, he basically became a fad.
Batman - an early YTMND too, now in the Hall of Fame(a fantastic starting point)
Brian Peppers - registered sex offender who looks like an alien.
Future Guy - a guy from the 80's with a weird haircut from the 'Safety Not Guaranteed' fad
Darth Vader - NOOOOO that's his fad basically. One popular YTMND is him singing classic songs.
youBROKEmyLIFE - some myspace guy who made a myspace post and really killed himself. You guessed it, they still make fun of him today.
Remember that's it's also a huge community(that I'm not part of) so there's a few inside jokes and the evolution of the fads can be quite fascinating to watch. Some of the content on YTMND is a lot funnier if you are involved, but to a casual browser just like me you only need to invest a minimum amount of time, eventually learn the popular characters and fads and laugh away.
Since I consider myself better than everyone else at knowing people's tastes, I'll post a collection of YTMNDs that are a great starting point and very funny in their own right. Why don't you go on the website, (
www.ytmnd.com) and check the Hall of Fame in the lower right corner.

This one is not the standard YTMND, but I LOVE this one for some reason. Perhaps I like drama? Play it with the volume up.

One of the things I love about Opera under Linux is that it seems slightly less inclined to bind itself to Shockwave Flush[0] than Firefox was. Therefore, I am protected from the more pointless and inane[1] parts of the Internet by the 'shortcomings' of my browser.

You could say Opera 'Flushed' all its extra features down the toilet.
