I have just had a disease in Oblivion, but then several strange things happened. I wonder if these are all bugs.
By the way, I'm playing the german GOTY edition of Oblivion (but I did not install Knights of the Nine or Shivering Isles yet) patched to version 1.2.0416. This is the latest official patch AFAIK. No mods and no cheats have been used. I am using Windows XP on a personal computer (no Xbox here).
I fought a zombie in a dungeon and contracted Astral vapours. It prevented me from regenerating magicka, but the condition did not get worse, and I had a lot of time to look for healers. I checked out Bruma and Cheydinhal and talked to anyone showing his or her face in the chapels there. I even talked to someone called Cirroc (or somehow similar) who should be a healer in Bruma (I think), but never had an appropriate line in the conversation menus.
Touching the different altars in the chapel in Bruma only gave me some message saying I had been blessed already today. No effect apart from that.
The people on the street never said anything about my disease. The UESP wiki states they would make some remarks occasionally.
Creating a potion to get rid of the disease was not possible since I did not have the appropriate reagents. So I returned to the Imperial City to see whether I missed a healer there (can't remember having found one even in the Temple district), when suddenly I saw my magicka bar rising again. I had recovered from the disease on my own, apparently.
Here are the questions which bother me since that day:
1. Where do I find healers in Bruma, Cheydinhal and possibly the Imperial City? How do I usually access their services?
2. Can anyone tell me what happened with the altars in the chapel? Are these limited to one use per day and I just received a message telling me this, or is this some kind of bug?
3. Is it possible to recover from a disease without the use of a potion, spell or other means of healing?
4. Is Astral vapours really a disease where one's condition does not get worse over time, or is that another bug? And do other people really ignore this disease, or should they make some comments on it?

I'll answer from 4 to 1 instead of 1 to 4:
4. Yes, it is. Check this list of diseases (
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Disease) and you'll notice that only Porphyric Hemophilia is different than the rest. Also, people won't tell you that you're sick unless you have more diseases active or are on some stage in Porphyric Hemophilia.
3. No, you need a Cure Disease potion or an ingredient which has the ability to cure disease (Mandrake Root does that I think) or visit a shrine. NPC healers won't help you in curing your diseases, they'll just sell Restoration spells.
2. I do believe that yes, they are limited to one visit per day. I'm not sure because I haven't really had that message appear, but I doubt it's a bug. You can read more on altars here: (

1. Like I said, "healers" only sell Restoration spells, they will not cure you or restore your health.

Well, after reading this and reinstalling the game, several things became clearer for me.

4. [...] people won't tell you that you're sick unless you have more diseases active or are on some stage in Porphyric Hemophilia.
This problem was corrected by reinstalling the game. Before that, a lot of things went wrong. I battled vampires for some (in-game) hours, slept for six hours, and became a vampire immediately (whereas the wiki says it takes three days). There was no message telling me I received
Porphyric Hemophilia, although one saved game after the battle but before my six-hour sleep indeed had my character infected with
Porphyric Hemophilia without being a vampire already.
After turning into a vampire, I did not feed upon people for several days and got "full" vampirism. Only at this stage people made comments about this disease, but not very often.
When I reinstalled the game and went through the first three states of vampirism again, people began to comment about it at stage 2 (50%) and regularly made remarks about it at stage 3 (75%).
All this apparently was caused by the game being damaged somehow.

In that case, it either was a bug or (more likely) caused by the damaged game, for I was healed of
Astral Vapors without eating any ingredient, drinking any potion, visiting an altar or using any sort of healing spell. The disease just vanished without reason.

Yes, that seems to be the case - usually. Once again, things only returned to normal again after reinstalling the game. Before that, I could wait several days and was never allowed to use any altar in a chapel. After reinstalling, I only received the message when using an altar more than once a day.

Lazy bastards.:ebil:
Thanks for the URL, by the way. I knew that wiki but somehow missed some of its contents.
