My goodness. When I read about this game in various recent computer nostalgia type articles, in the back of my mind, I thought yes, it must have been good for it's time. I thought the ageing graphics and sound, and the Ultima universe the game was set in, would be too much of a turnoff for me to enjoy the game now. If there is anyone who is reading this that has not played Ultima: Underworld, I'd like you to know that this game is everything everyone says it is, and better. Unless they say bad things. In which case it isn't.
Are you impressed at all by technical specs? How about floor and ceiling textures, sloped surfaces, polygonal objects, bridges you could go under, the ability to look up and down (with a vertical vanishing point; Duke3d didn't even have this), fly and swim. And this game came out *before* Wolf3d. Doom didn't even have most of the stuff on this little feature list. Were it created with the same hardware requirements of Doom in mind, just imagine what it would have been like.
And the more cerebral aspects? Let me put it this way; I see Ultima Underworld as being comparable in depth to Deus Ex (not to say they are equal, just comparable, which is a pretty big deal). It's a pity games like this are only just getting the acclaim they deserve from public and media, perhaps due to the fact that photorealistic graphics are now far more tangible than they used to be.

About five years ago or so I happened to walk past a shop and noticed this cheaply priced double game package with Ultima Underworld 1+2 written on it. I had no idea about PC games, but I thought I may as well have a look. Needless to say I was blown away. And when I finnally finished the first part I was even more blown away by the second one.
Anyway, I was really suprised that I met no-one in the last five years who has actually played it. Ive been travelling for the last 3 and a half years without using a computer (apart from work). When I got back home around Christmas time I was looking to chill out after being away for so long so I decided to get a game. It was then that I saw an interesting game called Thief - made by looking-glass. It, and its sequel, along with the underworld series have become my favourite games of all-time.
Its a great pity that so few games live up to their standard of excellence. When you play these games you actually feel like your in the game. What a shame that there is no more LGS!
