Just finished DX3 over the weekend. Amazing game. Some things could have been better, of course, but in my view the spirit of DX1 was there. And it was very stealthy, ghostable, which is great. As soon as I finished it, and watched to the end of the credits, seeing that short post-credits scene, it made me wonder. If the game is successful, and looks like it is, will they do a second one to bridge DX3 and DX1? Because it doesn't lead directly into the original, but does set up some things. How amazing would it be to have a second prequel that would lead directly into DX1. And, in my dreams, they'd remaster the original using the new DX3 engine.

I'm liking the idea of a D3 prequel, most definitely poroshin.
Only no more end-level bosses, please.
:(
You have nice dreams, too.

There are lots of events between this and DX that a sequel could explore. The Northwest Secession War hasn't happened yet, but there are a lot of books and e-mails and stuff that are clearly leading up to it, so it's the most logical place for them to go with the sequel.
The hard thing is: How do you do a Deus Ex game during the war? And do they ignore a good chunk of the playerbase's end-game decision and keep Adam Jensen as the protagonist?

Mary DeMarle keeps talking about the 25 years between the games on the timeline, and the fact that a lot can happen in only a few years, grinning as she states her hopes for a chance to do more titles, so a sequel to the prequel is definitely what's been on their mind, especially with all the backstory and projection they've already done, including exisitng written material that informs the new canon that isn't [yet] seen by the customers. :thumb:
The success of DX:HR means they'll likely get the chance to do that, but I don't know how long it might be before they greenlight it. They originally only planned for two teams, but ended up with three projects. Two projects are still in the works, and many of the DX:HR team are now helping out on T4, while the others vacation and decompress.

Where does Icarus Effect fit into all of this? Has anybody read it?
Painman on 20/9/2011 at 07:08
Haven't read it, but AFAIK, it's a leadup to HR. It fleshes out several of the characters found in the game, such as the (otherwise anonymous) 3 bosses.
I can't imagine Eidos not making another DX, seeing as this one appears to be a commercial and critical success so far, and I suppose there's room for one more between 2027 and 2052. But, probably not more than one.
Some folks have suggested that Eidos has plans to "reboot" the franchise, but the sorta-secret ending with Megan and Bob Page that unlocks "the D Project" trophy (replete with JC Denton imagery) seems to nix that idea.

I've been reading Icarus Effect and it's plenty good. A few things writing-wise bugged me at first, but it's pulled me in and I genuinely give a damn about the primary characters.
That said, Barret has gotten little in the way of characterization (outside of the obvious- big gruff asshole with a gun-arm) and Fedorova has gotten a bit more. Gunther is in this and he's perhaps not quite as crazy as he is in DX1.
Of the boss characters, Namir has gotten quite a bit of characterization compared to the others; he's a good team leader, but distant and it seems to be taken for granted that he never tells his people everything.
The primary conceit of the novel seems to be the perspectives of two people on opposite sides of the conspiracy, and how their threads intertwine. I like the direction it's gone so far; it plays up the conspiracy stuff that the game kind of put by the wayside, yet never feels like an obvious video game novel.

I'm a little torn. On the one hand I'd like to see a bridgegap between HR and DX1, but on the other I'm kind of curious to see how Eidos Monty would handle the weird after-the-cataclysm world that barely got fleshed out in Invisible War, either with a game set contemporary to it or something set a bit after it.

I'm thinking there could even be two games between DX3 and DX1, depending on how much of the mythos they want to explore and exploit. But definitely one, and hopefully soon, not in 11 years. Can someone with a good grasp on the series timeline come up with a likely scenario of how we go from the end of DX3 and to something like the terrorist attack on the Statue of Liberty and the foundation of UNATCO?

Eh? What's the third project?
