I'm sure this has been discussed before, but was the Mechanist cathedral the same one from Thief 1, except refurbished? Or is it another one that is similar?

No, the Mechanist Cathedral is not the same as the Hammerite Cathedral. Completely different floor plans.

You might be thinking of the Mechanist seminary, which was an old Hammerite cathedral taken over by the mechanists, and gutted into a Mechanist one (that former Hammerite cathedral doesn't appear in the previous game though)

I'm not sure if the seminary was abandoned, or how they took it over from the Hammers. I can't imagine hammerites willingly selling it or giving it away to a bunch of heretics, so maybe the former. Unless it was by force, like the Protestants did in the 1500s, taking over Catholic churches to strip and reuse them
