I have 2gb ram on my XP machine and I cannot afford a new computer. I am thinking of putting in 4gb, but as I understand it XP cant use it all. My question is this; will I really be able to notice the different when playing games?

If you have the 32bit version of windows xp, then it will only use 3.25-3.5gb of the 4GB.
And it depends on the game, most games will run smoother, because of the extra memory. In my book its woth getting an extra 2gb, I ran my Xp & Vista with 3.25 for ages untill I upgraded to windows 7 x64.
FYI:
You can enable (
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEdrv.mspx) PAE extensions and this will allow windows to address the full 4gb, but only attempt this if you know what your doing.

Rest assured I don’t know what I am doing. But on your advice I will upgrade and hopefully not break anything.
Thank you.
