My opinion is that they picked Tracer Tong's new Age.
It's the feeling I had when I read the first articles about it, anyway. I don't even know if I'd think the same reading them today. :erg:
I think Tong's ending is the most promising for a sequel... The consequences are much less predictable (sp?)... With Helios JC rules the world, with the Illuminati, everything's like before...

That sounds like Diablo for me. :(
IMO, as I saw the picture on pp.42 of August PCGamer, which is a MJ12 commando-looking soldier (but meaner), I'd suspect that DX2 starts with Illuminati ending of DX. JC Helios needs no such soldier to do its bidding. To me it sounds like SS1/2.

Plus the fact that electricity itself wasn't obliterated, so you'd have these pockets of relatively untouched and highly advanced civs interspersed geographically with poorer areas where people have to live by their wits. Tong in my view, was the most interesting character to deal with. Helios was a monologue searching for an audience, while Everett just sounded like a politician. Tong in contrast, was an intelligent, slightly delusional idealist.

Thank you, Skilless & averroes! Everything starts to make sense now!
You wake up in an incubator, knowing nothing but your name: Alex Denton. Alarms are everywhere. "Warning. Warning. Safety protocols have been disengaged. Please clear the immediate area...." A voice in your head tells you to escape from this facility before it blows up, then (if you succeed) find a person named JC....
Now it really sounds like SS2! :thumb: However, since DX2 happens 20 years after DX, I don't know how to fix the gap...20 years of 'recovery time' like SS1? :p

There's also the fact that, until the ending, you're Tong's errand boy for a significant portion of the game. Not once does JC question Tong's motives or ideals (again, until the ending).
It also offers the most potential for a different sequel, as averroes said, though the way I see it, with both the Illuminat and Helios endings, everything's the same as before (little guy against big bad guy). With the Tong ending, there are at least more possibilities ... MJ12 is still around, though in splinter factions (perhaps) ... and the Illuminati is still weakened, though they may again rise to power with MJ12 in disarray. The political possiblities are massive.
The setting of the original was, arguably, the collest damn thing about it. I'd like to see it much more enriched in the sequel.
Here I'be gone from expectations to hopes ... in general, don't confuse these. :)

Actually, I just went back to (
http://www.deusex2.com) DX2's pre-site to have a look... And here's what they say:
Quote:
Overview
Approximately 20 years after the events depicted in Deus Ex, the world is only beginning to recover from a catastrophic worldwide depression.
In the chaotic period of recovery, several religious and political factions see an opportunity to re-shape a worldwide government to their agendas, understanding that the right moves now could determine the shape of human society for decades - even centuries - to come.
In this techno-nightmare, take part in the dark struggle to raise the world from its own ashes
Okay. So, they may have found something else, but Tong's solution would pretty much fit the description. To me, it completely destroyed not only the networks, but also servers and all kinds of systems, databanks, etc. Just like in Fight Club when they destroy the banks' database to ruin the economy. So everything's pretty f*** up.
On top of that, there's the gray death. They may have a vaccine and get rid of it, but with the communication networks down, it'll take time to transmit the specs of the products to other communities all around the world. (Thank you, Tong...:p)
20 years seems a good approximation to get everything more or less clear, like, after a blast the smoke puffes away, if you see what I mean.
And although it may not take that long for the Illuminati or MJ12 to recover, well, until someone finds "the" clue (whether to prove my point or not), I'm thinking they picked Tong's Dark Age.

I think at the start Tracer Tong is just trying to stop the MJ12 conspiracy, but then at the end he sees a chance to stop other people and he tries to go for it, letting his idealism get the better of him for a while. I hope Tracer Tong comes back for more in the sequel.

That's pretty much a definite guarantee, since he was Warren's favourite character.
