No - Garrett's eye is not mechanical. He receives his special ability to focus (related to his eye) in a significant story beat early in the game (sorry, no spoilers)

I dont really have a problem with it.
(Definitely the least of the potential problems so far.)
It looks cool.
In a not particularly original kind of way.
Although I do understand for worldspace sticklers how it may not seem quite steampunk.
But what would be the alternative?
Other then just looking like an eye?
Some kind of brass and glass camera lens deal?
That might look a little too grotesque.
Which I'd be fine with personally,
but for the general public.

How 'bout just continuing with the original mechanical eye and the original story of how Garrett came to have that mechanical eye? That part of Garrett's story wasn't broken in the first place so why try to 'fix' it? Oh wait; that's right, T4 is EM's
reboot of the Thief world. Anything goes. Including Garrett's mechanical eye, obviously.
:p

In Thief DS when Garrett used The Eye artifact to activate the final glyph I assumed he got his real eye back since the Hammerites and the Pagans got their artifacts back. That means his mechanical eye was magically replaced but some functions pertinent to the mechanical eye 'fused' with the real eye with additional enhancements perhaps from The Eye itself thus explaining his 'focus' abilities. Just a theory.

Garrett still seems to have a mech eye all the way through the closing cutscene of DS though, still it's a reasonable idea.

In the closing cutscene in Thief DS Garrett seems to have a very noticeable case of "pink eye" which could be his mechanical eye but I like to think he got his real eye ( with possible enhancements ) back from The Eye artifact and it is just showing some irritation as it gets acclimated to being a living eye again back in it's original host. If you look closely it doesn't show that mechanical looking leaf shutter iris one can see in the closing cutscene in Thief TDP nor does it glow as in 3rd person view. It just looks for the most part like a normal real eye imo. Again it's just a theory and perhaps meaningless as far as the reboot Thief is concerned.:)
