Ah, Akira Kurosawa's Ran...lovely, lovely. I do believe it was influenced by one of Shakespeare's works, aye?
Sure, the blood is laughably fake, but everything else makes me float in such a dreadful world of intrigue and betrayal. Great times.
Ran was a takeoff on
King Lear. Kurosawa used Shakespeare in a couple of films and also adapted characters from his works.
In
Hidden Fortress, the two peasants were Morganstein and Gilderstern (I think that's right), from Hamlet.

How common is that in the US? Do the video stores also put warning stickers on subtitled DVDs so that people don't get the wrong one?
DVDs of foriegn language films that have Englishized titles most usually have a choice of Sub-title languages (French, English, Spanish being the most common), and are often dubbed in English. Films from China often have Mandarin as the spoken language, with Cantonese sub-titles (no choice), and an assortment of sub-title languages in the Options menu. With the extensive Vietnamese and Korean populations in this area, the films will often be dubbed in one of these, and also offer Sub-titles in one of these, as well as English.
If the cover name is in the language of the country of origin, then the cover will usually say "Sub-titled" along with other reproduction information.
VHS tapes often do have "Sub-titled" on the cover. Depending on where you buy or rent them, the sub-titles can be English, or Spanish in this area.

MacBeth *Nods in agreement*I did knew about Kurosawa basing elements of his various from Shakespear's works (and westerns too which actually ended up inspiring spaghetti westerns, olol). Man knew how to make the West work in the East beautifully :). I have yet to buy me some choice Criterion-collection titles of his (Ikkiru, for instance). I have to watch Kagemusha (have it, haven't seen it yet, alas).
And yes, Akira Kurosawa/Toshiro Mifune combo was always a winner. :)
I think I read something about Mifune and Kurosawa having a falling out later in their careers, any truth to this?, if yes, such a shame...

Golden Flower is Zhang Yimou's movie? I've seen Hero, thanks.

MrDuck I'm sure you will enjoy Kagemusha when you get to it. It is the story of two clans who battled for years. I'll not spoil it for you.
Another take off on the same story is Heaven and Earth or, Kagetora or Ten to Chi to all the titles are the same movie.
Ikkiru is one of my favorites. Another excellent movie is Kwaidon if you can get the full version. The one usually shown is three short stories (it was cut down for the non-Japanese markets), the full version has four stories.
A real spook story is Onibaba a gritty black and white ghost story. Also known as: Devil Woman,The Demon,The Hole,The Ogress,The Witch
I have some 30 or 40 assorted Samurai movies, as well as some 2 or 300 others in all genre.
May I suggest you check out The Legend of 1900 starring Tim Roth (he's in the newest HULK offering). Good drama and in my opinion, superior to the DeCaprio Titanic.
Edited to correct name. Roth, Ross, fingers and qwerty keyboard do not always agree. Thanks Harvester, I never would have noticed.

Also featuring a simply brilliant Ennio Morricone score, one of his best ever. Listened to it countless times.
BTW it's Tim Roth, not Ross. Good movie though, I agree.

Heard a few of the titles you reccomend, Blacky me old cock. Some I've never heard, will have to fish at'em soon :). Right now I'm changing my DVD collection into Blu-ray, inch by inch. Recently I bought There Will Be Blood, Pan's Labyrinth and Unforgiven for Blu-ray.
