Yeah, that utility was pretty useful a while back. These days, however, you can play the whole thing in either Linux or Windows with Exult, which also allows for different resolutions and other things.

twisty, Aha. So, some of the U series are possible on a 'modern' machine then? 1st gen p4 at 1.7 & 1/2 gig of rdram using 98SE? & if so, how far down the series is it worth attempting to go? If it's possible to get there fr here, I'm sure the U series of games can be had via e-bay. TIA.

In my opinion, start playing from Ultima 7 - The Black Gate & Serpent's Isle. U7 is an amazing game that still looks graphically good today. Its such a richly detailed game with an enormous level of freedom.
Exult allows you to play Ultima 7 - The Black Gate & Serpent's Isle on any version of Windows. They really have done an amazing job of it. You still need the original games in order to play it though.
I've played most of the other Ultimas as well. U5 is a very good game and a lot of fans seem to think that its the best of all of them. For a first Ultima though, I really reckon that U7 offers the best value for you. At any rate, U7 is my favourite Ultima.
U8 was great as well, but wasn't in the same league as some of the previous installments. That said, however, it's still a classic and a highly enjoyable Ultima.
Unfortunatley, they finished off the series with U9. Although I really liked it, I didn't enjoy it as an Ultima. They basically released an unfinished game that lacked most of the cool things that made earlier installments such great games. But I did enjoy it on its own once I decided to ignore the fact that it was an Ultima. To this day, its still one of the best looking 3d games around.
