There are actually two ways in.
One is to go through the first set of doors which are unlocked, and then pick open the metal door on your left. Follow the corridor and enter the next door. Look above the desk for the key. The key is there in both missions. The second way is to rope arrow up onto the barricade behind the pawn shop and climb up on the ledge. From there you can jump across to the balcony.
Ah yes.....I remembered shortly after posting. The balcony leap is always the classy way in :)

Which castle in Wales are you re-creating John? Castell Caernarfon? :D

I'm recreating Beaumaris Castle in North Wales.
Here is a screen snapshot of what I have done so far:

And it's the only way to get in while ghosting. :)

For those of you who can't figure out how to get out of the cell in the beginning... Read the following...
Frob the bed roll to find a hole underneath.
I'm posting this because many people have contacted me via email about this.
Sorry about the confusion.

Cons:
--Too many open spaces with nothing in them.
--While the plot is interesting, it needs guidance. I absolutely did not understand it at all. I kept thinking "This is Garrett... no wait, it's not, it's John... no, it's some other guy... wait, why is Basso mentioned? This isn't Jenivere... no, wait, it is, no, wait, it's not... why is she called Jeni, then? What the...? It's all a dream and Bobby Ewing is in the shower?" Even now, I am totally confused.
--Loot requirement a little too high. I was frustrated all to hell at times.
Pros:
--The toilets in B's place are the best I've ever seen in Thief, OMs or FMs. Seriously.
--Some of the areas are VERY beautiful--particularly the front of B's and the other outdoor areas, as well as some richly done indoor rooms.
--Snow falling through a manhole! One of those perfect little extra touches that makes a person feel they're somewhere real. Nearly all snow FM authors forget this sort of thing.
--The city area feels a lot like a real living place.
--The mission felt very full (although at times too full). Concentrate your areas a little more next time, is my recommendation--you had some great hiding places and exceedingly clever secrets, but I felt there was too much space between places I could get into. Too much walking. I love to explore, but when there are so many obstacles between and you're trying to find that one tiny little pile of coins somewhere in the entirety of the level it gets exhausting.
--John's diary... it got me. It was well-written and felt very real... I guess I know why that is, though. I'm sorry she didn't write back. :(
Overall, I think you would've benefited from a sounding board--either a beta-tester's extra-detailed feedback or a co-writer. But I still enjoyed this mission very much for its merits. I hope to see more from you in the future!

Thanks Wynne. This mission is basically the same as Jenivere De Ja Vu. I know what you are saying about the story, and Jeni & Jenivere are two different people.
No Jeni never did write back, but I wasn't counting on it anyway. It was basically a revelation of the past. I may incorporate the next part of the story into my upcoming FM.
Anyway thanks for your Pros and Cons. :)

I think you found a very productive way to express those unfulfilled longings. It was quite touching, almost haunting. One of the most memorable aspects of the mission besides the real city/atmospheric scenery and snow things. :)
You did a great job on this mission, flaws aside.

I have been through
Bafford's
and
returned the ring
but I cannot figure out how to get to
the northern section of the map, i.e. north of the area where the waterway runs
Thanks Wynne. :) Actually recently I did get in touch with Jeni, and part of what I learned is in A Love Story II part 2.
lurker - There are at least two ways to get there. Either climb into the building with several glass windows, or open the North gate. There is a locked door just west of the building with glass windows. Pick it open and run up the ramp to the gate lever.
