It's kind of a shame that the first mission plays so badly the first time for most people (and that included me). I'm sure more than one person has been put off the entire game because of it.
Strangely though, after having played the game a few times, I've come to like that map more and more. It really offers a great environment to fool around in. ;)

I had no idea the first mission was so poorly regarded; I absolutely adored it and playing it in the demo was the impetus for me to buy the game.

Also, what are the main differences between playing on normal and realistic? More realistic yes, but in what ways? I'd really like to know.
Thanks
The
only difference the difficulty settings make is in the damage
you take from the damagetypes 'shot' and 'autoshot' (so pistols, machineguns, botmachineguns, turrets etc). Flamethrower damage, tranq damage, radiation etc: all the same on all difficulty settings.
For the affected damagetypes: Easy is 1.0x damage, Normal is 1.5x, Hard is 2x, and Realistic is 4x.
That's it. Nothing else is different.

Posting in defence of Liberty Island. It's a great mission which is essentially a microcosm of the entire game. An objective, an optional objective, enemies, allies, secrets, stealth options, TNT crates.
The lack of a light gem is a strange one to complain about. Deus Ex is primarily a shooter in which it's possible to sneak in. It's easy enough to do, once you know the AI routines and physics in the game. Expecting it to be Thief in the near-future (complete with Light Gem) is obviously a bad idea.
In response to the OP, the AI doesn't noticably improve and it's easily the weakest point of the game. Luckily it's the only weak point :D

I'm not expecting it to be like Thief;) It will just take some time for me to work out when I'm hidden and when I'm not (hence the comment about the light gem), although I am intending to play this as stealthily as possible.

I never had any luck with pepper spray. How do you use it right? I'd always run out too fast, or be at the wrong distance, standing there waving a spray can around like a moron while getting plugged full of holes.

Pepper spray is kinda screwed in DX.... I think it has a half life of 0.2 seconds, meaning 0.2 seconds after the spray stops, they recover from its effect. By the time you switch to a new weapon they are about to draw theirs on you.
I Shifter supposedly increases this time to a few seconds making the pepper spray actually do something other than take up your inventory. Otherwise, there is no reason to use it.

Christ, yes. It took me about a dozen reloads to get a couple of NSF standing next to each other incapacitated with the spray. At the end of it I still couldn't have done it reliably, just waving it around randomly until it worked on them both. I found the time they were incapacitated for to be ok though.

Pepper Spray... it's hard to use but it can be done, you have to attack them initially from stealth with it. Basically you sneak up behind them crouched, stand up and start spraying them in the head with it, don't stop until they turn around and catch it in the face, continue to spray until they scream about being blind and start to run away... this is when you switch weapons and chase after them, you can beat them about the head and shoulders with your baton until they fall unconscious...
It's a but buggy and doesn't always work, but some enemies seem more prone to it, for example if I give Gunther my pistol when I rescue him, I can immediately sneak up behind the guy that patrols the balcony directly above that area and spray him into a panic then beat him down with my baton and then get his pistol, works every time so far.
Also if they don't start to run and it seems like they will put up resistance, get behind them immediately and encourage their cooperation by beating them with the baton.

But if you are able to spray it at their head from behind till they turn around you probably would be able to just knock them out with the prod or the baton. The latter is especially handy and rather powerful. Though it works best by hitting across the back not the head. With shifter I was able to one round commandos and black men with it. I just now play it without shifter to see whether or not it's still as powerful as it was.
