After checking i'm afraid it isn't a saint but a winged twilight (whatever those two creatures are) sorry for the confusion.
I stole the grand gem from the wizard's guild in Balmora.

Hrm.. I've actually picked "100" locks w/ a journeyman's pick, but my security skill's pretty up there. I suspect you need to increase that, though you can buy a master's lockpick from a few people in vivec.. I just don't recall anyone other than Gentleman Jim, and he's behind a locked "65" door.

yeah, even a masters lockpick won't help if you securit level isn't at least near 50...

There are 2 scrolls within the game which are pretty common that could help you
Ondusi's unhinging: unlocks lvl 40-60 (there's a 50% chance that this scroll wont unlock the lvl 50 lock, so you may want to get a couple)
Ekash's locksplitter: unlocks lvl 100, this one is slightly harder to find and more expensive, but it will unlock anything in the game.

I say do it my way, slaughter everybody till smebody has the key to the door in heir inventory if their's peope in the house their's usally a key that some killin can find.

And Ondusi's Unhinging is pretty easy to find. If you're going to be an assassin however, you may consider joining the Mages or the Thieves - you don't lose anything by joining, and you gain the ability to train in various disciplines for a low price. Disciplines that you may find very useful indeed. For Travel, Mages' teleportation can't be beat (although you can only go to other cities that actually have Mages' Guilds).
Vivec is a "civilized" city. Beware some Canalworks and most Underworks, there are at least rats in there. As long as you behave, most other denizens of the underworks will leave you alone (and I recommend behaving, some of them can be rather tough down there). The rest of the city will leave you alone.
Your quest to "join" the guild is not too much - you may find yourself over your head once you go out on an "assignment". But then you will know that you're not ready :)
Hope you're packing at least a single scroll of Divine or Almsivi Intervention...

LOL yes...
I managed to get the lock open with a scroll of Ondusi's unhinging (thanks Kilana) and i joined the morag tong, well half joined - i have to kill Feruren Oran at the Elven Nations cornerclub in the Hlaalu Plaza.
I have to admit i got a fair few stabs in (with my silver short sword) before he turned me into ash with his spells.
I suppose I’m not ready just yet... (I’ve only increased in level twice).
I think I’ll just have to look around for some less dangerous work.
One thing that is bothering me is when i attack him my crime is reported and it wont let me taunt him to get him to attack me first.
The fine for killing some one is 1k isn't it - do I have to pay 1k each time I 'assassinate' someone to get me off the hook with the law?
Surely there is another (less expensive) way to assassinate someone? (Any suggestions?)
Cheers

On a normal assignment you get a "Writ". If somebody reports your crime just show this writ to the guards and everything is okay, assassination is allowed in this society. Most of the time nobody reports you though.
Red on 11/6/2002 at 20:33
Yes i wondered what that writ was for thanks for the tip Denti.
Can anyone suggest a tactic to kill this Feruren Oran?
He seems to rely on spells a fair bit - two shots of his 'orange glowy' spell and i'm toast.
I'm enjoying wondering around vivec sorting out minor disputes among merchants, stealing the odd drake and weapon but my main goal is to gain enough experience/money/weapons to kill him (i'm only level 3).
I have about 689 drakes and some very nice soul gems (including greater and grand with souls of winged twilight and ogrim in them) so i was thinking an enchanted item might help - any thoughts?
Perhaps some sort of scroll of spell immunity or reflection would be better (and cheaper)? If so can anyone recommend one and if possible state where such an item could be located in vivec?
Maybe its just a matter of levelling up to a stage where my silver short sword hits more / does more damage but I get the impression I need [insert spell or magical artefact] to give me the edge.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

At lvl 3, you shouldn't be doing assasination work... (mainly cause most of the npc's in the game are lvl 5-7) Do some fighter's guild work, or explore the countryside killing off cliffracers or something. Also, sneaking up and hitting the guy first is generally a good idea for an assasin, that critical hit can sometimes really do some good. Also, there are no cheap or effective reflection/spell absorption scrolls and potions, they are rare and almost comepletely useless... There are lots of resist/shield scrolls and potions out there, but again... they arent that effective. Then again, I'm a lvl 54 and nothing in the game can kill me(unless I do something stupid like spawn 50 dwarves that can hit for 70)... when you get to lvl 15, most npc's and creatures will not be able to hurt you.
