Eurogamer preview makes me wondering if I still want this game pre-ordered... I want to play this game badly but I'm afraid of total disappointment... I think I should rather wait for first reviews of the game...

So I guess no one else read the first couple sentences of the IGN preview?
Quote:
Garrett is a terrible thief. Invariably,
each of his big jobs ends with the “Master Thief” getting caught red-handed.Apparently we can look forward to a plethora of escape sequences, and we now know that all of the major missions will end with the worst bits the game has to offer.
That particular bit makes me cringe. Why does he have to get caught every single damn time? That seems counter to, ya know, the words MASTER THIEF.:tsktsk:
Well, the Ausgamers preview where the guy mentions how you can customize the UI heavily is very welcome news indeed.

Is it still the word that you cannot disable the shade around your vision (I can't remember what people call it)?

Nothing has changed on that front, as far as I know.

Correct, it can not be disabled. Yet for some reason, the light gem can.

I doubt it will be long until tech-savvy players find the setting that allows it to be turned off. Afterall, it is just a single variable, that would have been a 5 minute job with the Scaleform UI SDK to add into the options screen.
But player freedom in Thief is not allowed to compromise the creative vision of the developers. The most obvious example of that fact is that there is a cutscene in the game where Garrett is stealing a map, and can hear well in advance a bunch of guards trying to break into the room. The player doesn't get the choice to hide before being detected, the cutscene decides that Garrett must stand around like an idiot so that there could be a chase scene next.
Apparently Eidos Montréal flat-out lied when they said that you could play through the entire game without being seen.

Here's one new(?) preview:
(
http://blackpanel.com.au/2014/01/26/thief-preview/) by "Karen" and "Erin".
Here's some very select extracts from that preview:
Quote:
"Thief was smooth and intuitive, a pleasure to control."
Quote:
"Feeling around for the vibration on my controller, coupled with excellent hand animations, gave me a genuinely integrated experience."

Heh, they seem to like all the features that some people in here hate with a passion. :p
I suppose that's a good thing in a way, but... I dunno.

But they don't know how to spell Garrett so I'm not sure how much credibility they have. :)

Maybe. Just depends how locked down it is. Could be a matter of finding a setting, or it might require creating some blank textures to overwrite the ones used in the Shroud effect so that it's rendered invisible.
Texture replacement hinges on how the game files are packaged. Will someone need to figure out some custom format to make an extraction / insertion tool like was required for TDS.
