I know Ultima better than any of you plebes! badge as if it bestowed him with some old-school street cred.
I played 'Annihilator' on my TRS-80 model 100. Does that give me any sort of street cred?
No?

To me, the most obvious connection between Ultima (or any other RPG, but LGS made both UUs before) and Thief is that T1/Gold is centered around your typical RPG thief/rogue character and their adventures in a fantasy environment, even if Thief's is very low-fantasy. The same can't really be said of T2 and TDS which are more or less straight-up burglar simulators with an emphasis on more "classic" jobs.

Okay, okay, people care about Ultima.
Of course you will if you're a fan. I care about loads of games that may or may not have influenced Thief but no one cares if you've played Ultima in the context of NuThief. NuThief should take its lessons from Thief 1 and 2. When you build on the legacy of a game you should be mindful of what is relevant, not what influenced the grandfather of the person that made the chairs that the original team chose to sit on. Constantly and incessantly bringing up Ultima is really, really, crushingly dull.

Not the point IMO. The point is that GD brings up Ultima like someone with Tourette's swears. There may be relevant things to say about old games with respect to the new
Thief, but GD's
Ultima mantra has never been relevant. Not because of
Ultima but because GD doesn't say a single thing about it. He just chants his mantra as if that meant anything.

Dude, we're singing from the same hymn sheet.

Yeah, you're talking about the same thing, Thirith. Go eat some chocolate man you'll feel better ;)

Why is it that Ultima gives people street cred but namedropping Xyphus just gets you weird looks?
Tomi on 3/2/2014 at 18:26
I must admit that I've never even heard of Xyphus before, but I think I know why you're getting these weird looks now...

Maybe they are looks of lust and longing?

I don't know if it's better or worse he does his ass fighting with his bare hands. :p
Definitely looks like Ultima anyway.
I'm not one to want to stay too locked in an old style of gaming and don't mind a constant evolution. But I don't like the culture of popups and constant metagame stuff these days either, which that leaderboard joke highlights. I guess TDM minimalism represents what I like, if only we could have it with the lush world T4 has created.
