The escape sequences aren't dishonest marketing exactly. If you can go through every mission without killing or being seen by a single person up until the end cap mad dash extravaganza, then officially you can play the game as they've claimed.
It's just that EM has added an extra feature to spice up the exit sequences that isn't exactly in character with the rest of the game. Like Brethren said previously, they're like Deus Ex's boss battles.
With Deus Ex, EM told us, and I quote...
Quote:
IGN AU: The first game allowed you to complete it without killing anyone. Is that still possible in Human Revolution?
Jean-Francois Dugas: Yes - minus the boss fights.
He didn't try and wiggle his way around the question, he answered it honestly like he should have. Apparently honesty isn't one of the Thief teams pillars, so I stand by what I said; screw them.

ThePhotoshop,
One of the developers said fans of Benny won't be disappointed. What humor, if any, did you see in the demo?

I didn't see Benny but one random noblewoman NPC's ambient dialogue in the city did make me chuckle:
"I wish a black hand would break through my window."

I think EM don't count the escape sequences, in their head, as part of the mission. To them, the mission ends at the objective complete and you get a separate escape sequence. Not to mention, the logic of "If you are forced into an alarm, the player didn't fail. Therefore, everything under the player's control can be ghosted."
Basically they have a weird idea of what ghosting is and the escape sequences don't count to them. You can ghost everything, because the escape sequences don't count.

Yes, remember when Joe Khoury (from EM) was asked about ghosting in during one of the earlier Thief presentations, and he said something like "What, do you mean like walking through walls or something?"

Yeah I remember when I heard that I pretty much figured the devs dont know much of what made the original thief games epic, or probably anything beyond the basics of thief that being it was a stealth game with a protagonist named Garrett.

Or they didn't know the terminology. Thief doesn't mention anything about ghosting specifically. That was a term coined here at TTLG.

Stick to Dark Souls, loser.
They're the ones who are always claiming to be BIG FANS of the series, and how they are always respecting the DNA that made Thief great. Don't go around pimping your shit if you can't back it up.
Sad that you're, for lack of better term, siding with EM. If think you'll see, when Thief comes out, it's going to make Bioshock Infinite look like mother *&()%#* GOTY. I hope I'm wrong.
