If you have the money, upgrade your GPU. But it isn't hugely nessecary if you don't mind static lighting. i'm running medium-high on a 6200 at 1024x768 at the moment.

...Is not pretty enough to be worth spending hundreds of dollars. But looking at the bright side; the future will be much brighter for him with a powerful GPU.

Depends on how many demanding games he'll be interested in next year or two. If not too many, much of his investiment will go down the drain.

One of the joys I get from getting a new graphics card is replaying older games in their full glory, with everything maxed out.

Yeah. When I went from High 800 x 600 no AA/AF, to Ultra 1024 x 768 16xAF/4xAA in Doom 3; it looked quite a bit better. :p
