A game so similar to DX... - by dormcat

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
(

Virtually DX stripped off point-based stats. Fully equipped with night vision, reusable/disposable lockpicks, "wall mines," and "camera jammers." Even "Third Echelon," Chinese army and NSA are involved.
Where's their creativity?

No, because its nothing like DX at all. Its a HELL of alot more like Rainbow Six from what I`ve seen of it.
Freddo on 8/11/2002 at 13:40
It's a Metal Gear clone
Not a DX one
However, I do belive that it's gonna be very good. So I'm getting it.

Originally posted by icemann No, because its nothing like DX at all. Its a HELL of alot more like Rainbow Six from what I`ve seen of it. I have every piece of R6 series (R6/EW/RS/UO/CO/BT), and I can hardly agree on that. For R6 series, once you're in field, you're on your own, no infolink or equivalent. Not to mention medkit, which does not exist in R6 world. A single shot at legs or arms will slow you down or affect your aim, respectively, and if it lands on head or torso you're killed or incapacitated. The only similarities are recon missions of R6 (that blasted dacha!)
The main reason I said it looks like DX is based on its plot. NSA, Echelon, Chinese military, infolink (with Manderley, Carter and Jacobson equivalent), and you are even augmented!!
Never tried Metal Gear...but I agree with Freddo since UbiSoft released XBox version prior to PC version -- not a usual practice for them. Since it bears Tom Clancy's name but is not developed by Redstorm, I think it would attract less R6 veterans than MG players.

Tom Clancy games have gone crap of late. Sum of All Fears was bodge. Nothing like the brilliant games before it (Ghost Recon, R6 series). Adn Metal Gear is crap. Deus Ex r0x0rs. Don't compare such a good game to other stuff, cause it's like nothing else which is one of the things that makes it so good.

You liked Ghost Recon? I didn't. Couldn't even be bothered to complete the first level. It was unimpressive compared to the benevolent tyrant (!) that is OFP.

Hmm... I've been playing this on the xbox and I'd have to say that the DX conection really ain't that evident. Yes your a special agent and there's a lot of stealth but it's a lot closer to the current state of the world.
You do not have any augmentations other than your comm-link thang. You do not have skills. You can't go around with a massive GEP launcher. There aren't genetically modifed grays/karkians/greasy, greasy, greasles or robots.
There are a few similarities but you may as well say Metal Gear Solid 2 = Deus Ex, which I'm sure you would agree is B.S.
I don't agree with the MGS2 = Splinter Cell thing either, MGS2 is a lot less realistic, cheesy etc. They both have stealth/special agents type things going on...
but Deus Ex = Golden Eye? No.
Splinter Cell is a good game though, I actually popped in here because I thought this would be exactly the kind of game you might just like if you're a DX fan, so I'd recommend it to you all.
Deus Ex still 0wnz though!!! :thumb:

Is this game ever gonna come out for pc, too?
ferret on 25/12/2002 at 05:33
It could be similar to Goldeneye in some respects. Some of the weapons and character models are similar, and a couple of the levels. Also, advancement in Goldeneye is usually by taking advantage of quirks in the engine and AI, and some would say the same of Deus Ex - evil, twisted, incorrect people, natch. ;)

and it's going to be good. Anyone who says it's a ripoff of deus ex hasn't read much about the plot. You are NOT augmented, for one. You simply have thermal and night vision goggles and can do lots of kickass things like jumping up and doing the splits between to walls in a hallway and dropping down on someone and knocking them out silently. You can grab people from behind and use them as a human shield if you're in a tight spot or just grill them for information or force them to open a combination-locked door or something like that. It's more like thief that dx or metal gear, as far as gameplay is concerned. It takes place in 2004 so it's much more realistic than DX as far as the weapons and plot is concerned, and though I think there are conspiracies invovlved, it's Clancy-type stuff, not an illuminati coup type of thing. There is also a pc demo out. You can get it at (
www.3dgamers.com) or fileplanet if you want to wait in line forever and a day.
