a funny thing about my computer... (sort of asking for clarification) - by rachel

Well, first, those who read (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49057) this may see (or remember) what kind of computer I was using...
Until yesterday.
Yesterday, I got this (
http://www.fnac.com/Shelf/article.asp?SID=1146b22f%2D8366%2D5642%2Dd348%2Dfc9ab512e116&UID=044c45005%2D4e28%2D4113%2D9017%2D920bdfedd26b&AID=&Origin=FnacAff&PRID=1347609&Detail=all#detailfiche) this new machine and as Deus Ex was the newest game I had, the one which required the most graphics and stuff, I tested the video card with it...
(It's in French, but the tech part should be easy to understand anyway)
Turns out that it works very well... A bit <i>too</i> well, actually.
It opened directly in 1024x768, which was perfect, but all the videos and scripted scenes ran too fast and in the game everything was going about twice as fast as before. As if the computer as too powerful.
I opened the *.exe properties and changed the compatibility settings to Win98, and now the gameplay is back to normal, although the cutscenes and videos are still about twice as fast as on my old computer...:erg:
That's quite funny, and as the gameplay is back to normal, not 'too' annoying (as I already know what they're gonna say anyway) but still it's somewhat disturbing...
Does anyone has an explanation?

That's wierd
I just got a new computer too and I haven't had a single problem. My old computer sometimes it would do the exact opposite of yours and move very slowly through gameplay. It was kind of cool at first because you could see bullets flying toward yor head, but it got annoying.

Actually I was wrong... <i>Everything</i> goes twice as fast...
A few examples:
1/ I can't jump. If I jump I fall half a second afterwards. The problem is simple, the jump is shorter, but the speed is the same. So when I try to jump over a gap, I always fall in it. This starts being annoying when you're on the roof of a ten-stories-high building and the only way out is the window on the next building's wall...
2/ Also, when the NSF activate the alarm, it lasts less than ten seconds. Same with the darts: the enemies fall after about four seconds. I didn't mind in the beginning, but now it pisses me off.
3/ When I hack into something, the ICE breaker runs out of time in about 15 seconds, which hardly allows me to activate/deactivate one single thing. (that is, when I know which thing I have to activate).
Anyone having an idea about how to avoid this speeding up... thank you =)

Try typing "slomo 0.5" with the cheats on. From what you describe, it would make some things too slow, other things the right speed. Maybe this would be playable, I don't know.
"slomo 1" returns it to normal if you decide against it.

I'll try that, thanks =)

No problem. Glad you've fixed it.
