A firm rebuttal to René. - by thiefinthedark

The opening about the videogame industry selling out is overstated and infantile (was there ever a time when the industry was not-for-profit?), but I agree with most of the rebuttals.
Even so, there's no point in being this hostile. The developers of Deus Ex are adults, and have already shown more honesty than the entirety of BioShock's PR in just a few short magazine interviews and messageboard posts. I see no point in throwing a way a valuable opportunity by being bitter and insulting.

Thiefinthedark gave a proper rebuttal to what he see's as DX:3 going down the wrong road. If Thiefinthedark did not care about DX he would not have spent the time to write what he wrote. He was not carelessly trolling. He laid out his arguement with facts and in proper format. One could argue against his reasoning in explaining the quotes in his agruement. But, you did not do such a thing. Your comment was unnecessary and brought nothing new to the discussion.

*shrug* If it doesn't float your boat, send me a PM and i'll take the original post down.
However, Considering my chosen profession is in the game design field, in the industry at hand, It didn't occur to me that taking the time to sit down and explain exactly how the industry that many people remember is gone would be construed as "Self Righteous", nor that calling (pardon the language) bullshit on the damage control that is coming out of Eidos after the edge article would be construed as such.
I'm not sure what was so wrong with my post. I used the word fuck but that doesn't change the tone that much. If your OP actually alludes to you being in the games industry and having some inside knowledge, please quote the spot. I glanced back through the whole thing and cant find that, and I didn't get that impression from the post the first time I read it. I apologize if that fact is well known to everyone but me.
I don't expect you to take down your post, and I would have no right to insist that you do. Nor did I mean to imply you don't have a right to
your opinion. My main problem was your implication that you already knew, while not actually making clear you had any information other than what has come out publicly. If you in fact do have inside knowledge, I'm sure we'd all be interested to know what it was. Perhaps this is just miscommunication, because your post doesn't come across anything but a personal, if well supported, opinion. An opinion about a game not yet out.
My point is that we can at least give it the benefit of the doubt, without crusifying it before it even comes out. I think its especially inappropriate to insult a developer on the forums without qualifying what you are saying beyond what seems like an opinion.

My mistake. I'll be sure to keep such candid peeks into the modern game industry to myself in the future. :tsktsk:
Don't be like that. Perhaps I came off as being a little harsh, but childish things like that don't help anything. I'm sure you are more than capable of defending your position.

This is very interesting. Perhaps if you elaborated on how you have this information it might give us insight into where your possible inside info on DX:3 might come from. And please do continue posting if it pleases you, but if you post something of that tone without making it clear you know something we don't,you have to be prepared to defend it.

@OP
*shrug*
The gaming industry is large enough to fall under the typical capitalist mode: low-risk high profit ventures. "Safe zones" were inevitable. The best way for gamers to have prevented this, ironically, would have been to not buy games (case in point: Dwarf Fort, which is free.) But the same is true of the movie industry and we still get good innovative movies like "The Fountain" every now and then.
I think that gaming might be getting to the point where industries understand that not all of their returns are measured in dollar values, and that as they age, having a pedigree of classic, iconoclastic games. The professional art scene is the same way, galleries host low-selling "innovative" artists (usually new-media types, who tend to produce less physical work to capitalize on) because it gives them credence. This might not be the case, but we can at least hope as much.
On the other hand, the game I've been most looking forward to for the past year is The Nameless Mod. Fuck professional design teams, 6 years of amateur mod work on an ancient engine is where it's at.

I agree with some of the points made but I guess it's futile to say anything other than "I guess we'll have to wait and see". Screenshots probably won't be enough and neither will video I suppose since some people will choose to focus on certain aspects and not get over them. So wait for the game to be released, or the demo, or whatever. But someone from the DX1 team was here a little while ago, played the game, and said we were on the right track. So disagree with me, hate me, whatever, it's cool. I don't blame you since the proof will be in the final product. But I'm not giving up on this forum!

I'm glad you're going to stick around, René. I am sure you understand that things only get nasty because people care a whole frakkin lot. But maybe when things get a little ugly, you should stop by the Thief forums. I am sure everyone at your studio would enjoy playing some Thief 2 fan missions. ;)

May we ask who?
(Or rather, we just ask, the question is, are you allowed to answer? ;))
