Hi, I just got Clear Sky, and have finished the Swamps and am about to go to Cordon.
My question is this: Is the game perhaps a little too open for its own good? I see Clear Sky troops running in random directions after goals they can't possibly complete, and other objectives being completed when I'm on the other side of the map. While it does give the illusion that the game is a living world, it falls on its face when something screws up and reinforcements don't come/dozens of allies beg for help at once/everybody at an objective runs into a meat grinder and dies. So, given the current unfortunate state of Clear Skies' scripting, would you have preferred a tighter version like SoC?

I'd rather they improve this, watching people never leave their camps was boring.

I agree, but looking at just what we have (I have no doubt modders will improve things significantly) which do you think would be best?

I would 'prefer a tighter version like SoC', but the more I play CS the more I become favourable to it. I learned to ignore the calls for help that I don't want to answer to, or if they come from too far, just like I ignored "emergent quests" in SoC. It's quite natural that those quests are active only for few minutes - attacks are sudden, and defenders aren't going to wait until you appear to start battle :) Don't worry, the situation will become more calm once you leave the Swamps. Actually, after my faction (the Loners) took over the Bandits camp in the Garbage, it became totally peaceful. No firefights and calls for help, it seems Loners, Freedom, and Duty all are happy now with their standing :) As for 'living world' in relation to factions war, it's really living - everyone has different situation with factions control and standing after some time, even if they don't participate in the factions war.
As for "when something screws up and reinforcements don't come", I already described the algorithm of their actions (as I understood it) in other thread.
Lets suppose you have the objective in your PDA - 'capture point D':
First, you need to locate on your PDA your faction's team with the same objective. You can check what objective an active team has (active teams are indicated with whitish tint) by pointing cursor at the team.
Second, lets suppose the team is currently in the point A, and between A and D are outposts B and C. If any of the outposts is under control of enemy, you will need to make sure your buddies take over the points successfully.
The thing is that they will never come from point A to point D if points B and C aren't under their control. Another important thing is that if points B and C are under control of a faction that is neutral to your faction, they will never come without your help. You'll need to clean the points yourself, because your attack team won't attack neutrals and therefore will never capture the points itself, thus will not come to capture target point D.

So you actually did completely wipe out the Bandits in garbage? In my game the Stalkers moving to attack the depot always get stuck at a Duty checkpoint and never make the final move towards the base. I guess I'll try wiping them out and see if the Stalkers will then move into the base.

Yep. It's already 5th-7th day since Loners and me took over the Depot, Loners fixed the camp there, and Bandits won't respawn anymore at all. After that, I joined Duty and we cleaned off Freedomers from Garbage, Loners still stay in the Depot as they should. But that music in the Depot aggravates me beyond belief, I tried to shoot at the receiver or tape recorder in the bandit's bar but to no avail

That's what I wrote about. You have to wipe out the Duty checkpoint that is on their way yourself, Loners won't attack it because they are neutral to Duty.
BTW, if you ever need money, a mini-game at Duty base is a perfect opportunity to make lots of it. It's easy to win, and as I understood, you can play it as many times as you wish.
And one tip: if you want to join Freedom eventually, don't approach the north-east corner of the complex where the entrance to X18 is in the Dark Valley too close (not that it's easy to do) before you get the objective, a certain event will occur after which you probably won't be able to join Freedom.

I definitely know about the mini-game. Good times. :thumb:
I wiped out all the Duty guys and the Stalkers decided to just set up camp there and never went into the Depot. As soon as I wiped out Duty their objective to take the Depot disappeared. Ah well. I'm just going to forget about it for now, as the Bandits are totally contained in their little base and I'm sure eventually by sheer dumb luck I'll finally get into a situation where I can wipe them out for good.
I guess I got lucky with the Freedom bug because I had no problems getting asked to join them. I'm planning on staying neutral until I finish the main plot then I'll come back and dive into the Freedom vs. Duty war.
