People are recommending Pilsner Urquell? Apart from tasting terrible, it's the only beer that's ever made me physically ill (well you know what I mean). And others I know claim similar experiences. There's one brand they sell here called Okanagan Spring (brewed in BC), and it comes in lager, pale ale and porter, each quite good, and also quite cheap for one of the fancier beers on the shelf.
Dethtoll -- doctor prescribes one night of heavy drinking with friends, preferably in public. You'll feel much better about everything, I promise.

Wow I didn't realise anyone esle had heard of okanagan springs! My family lives like a half hour away from the brewery. Although their 1516 is a bit thin, I'm a fan of the pale ale. It's cheap as well, for a good brew.

Have you ever tried Weissbier? Paulaner or Franziskaner come to my mind as excellent choices. Also Czech beer is great: original budweiser or Zlaty Bazant are brilliant.
And a general rule: after the fifth beer it all comes to nothing (hell by then rarely anything matters)
Cheers!

That's the American Pilsner Urquell? I heard it's quite bad - it is not brewed in Czech republic at all. My friend spent 1 year in America (dunno which state) and after she came back what she said she really was looking forward to the whole year was czech beer (and that means especially Pilsner Urquell).
It is stronger and more bitter than beers usually are, so that can explain your reaction to it ;)

Did Stitch suggest making a shandy? I thought was a purely australian term?
Also, dont have shandies, thats for the ladies
haha, a local brewing company (Leinenkugel's, mentioned above) recently tried to introduce the concept into the states, resulting in a nice summer afternoon beer. The ladies in my group of friends took to making their own shandies last summer by mixing wheat beer with lemonade, which I guess supports your statement but c'mon our dude here is trying to develop the taste.

mixing beer and lemonade is like having sex with a concrete condom

Don't knock shandy or a bit of lime when you're just trying to introduce yourself to the concept. Or indeed, when you'd like a drink but don't want the fuzz to nab you for drink-driving.

well, I guess we know who the real men in this thread are
