In a way I think the HDR effect is a bit over the top, having played with Bloom and 4xAA instead for a couple of hours. With lower resolution AA helps the picture quality a great deal, so it seems a good compromise.
Anyway ig, I'd suggest you just compare for yourself and see what you think.

That's hot. Ends up looking just like the screenshots that originally wowed me. Might be overdone for some users and not dynamic like HDR, but you can tweak the settings mentioned in that link to something more suitable. Personally speaking, I quite like the .4 and 1.1 settings suggested by the original poster.

Do you know what GeForce cards support HDR?

Any card in the 6xxx series and beyond.

Haha, excellent, I'm getting someone's FX 6200 on the cheap soon, and after that will come Oblivion :D

good luck, that is the crappiest 6xxx series card made. I doubt you'll get more than 3 FPS.

Even with the 256mb? I'm only getting it cause it's dirt cheap from a friend. And I'd be fine with fairly low settings and no fancy HDR or anything - that'd just be a bonus
EDIT: And is the regular 6200 better than the FX then? I've not looked it up properly
