The Dark Engine games + Nvidia drivers are flaky as it is (I have a 8800GT and run XP x64). Every time I update my drivers I run the risk of breaking the games and only fresh installs are able to fix the problem. (God, it's such a pain in the arse to mod up Thief 1 & 2 from scratch. At least with SS2 we have Kolya Tool and Mod Manager to alleviate a lot of the pain.)
So now we learn that ATI cards have problems of their own?
Bah. It'd be so much easier if we had the source codes for these games, then the renderer could be ported to OpenGL or a newer version of DX.

I havent seen anyone with a HD 4xxx card in that or this forum yet, I am looking at buying one, so I'll look into buying one under the 7 day dsd and come back here with my findings.

I'm also interested in HD4xxx so if you could test it in DE games (with ddfix of course - both DX6 (1.2+) and DX9 (1.0-1.1) versions), that would be great info for us here.
please test the issue (fps drops esp. with particle-like effects on screen) on both XP and Vista, if you can (if you read that rage3d thread I linked - the issue is much more pronounced in XP than in Vista - fps drops are much sharper there - but on Vista it's not perfect as well - but more bearable/playable).
Another ATI issue (for all chipsets) is that fog in T2 disappears in-game after going to menu etc and back - it happens in Vista only - XP is fine. Would be nice if you could test this problem as well.

er, it would and has only ever been DX9 dude, the DX6 component is embedded into DDfix...
Also it isnt pratical or even possible to downgrade DirectX.

?
I meant:
ddfix 1.0-1.1 = D3D9 renderer/game becomes D3D9 app (beneficial for HDxxxx users)
ddfix 1.2-1.3 = D3D6 renderer/game is D3D6 app (same as vanilla game versions - crap on HDxxxx fps wise)
never thought of "downgrade DirectX" (latest D3D contains libs for previous versions, so it's not needed at all) - only of testing HD4xxx with ddfix 1.0-1.1 and with 1.2-1.3 (to see whether using D3D9 renderer as opposed to D3D6 helps with fps - users on this forums already had reported that it does - but on HD3xxx so far, no one tested with HD4xxx yet, I think).
hope this clears things up

I have been unable to run T1 outside software rendering, but T2 and SS2 work fine with 175.19 for me, look just as gorgeous as they did with 162.18. (I'm using 7900 GTX, btw)

I've only got DDfix version 1.2.5, 1.2.6, 1.3.9-11, can you send me all the versions you have prior to 1.2.5..?
thanks

I swear that 4850 card from Bikerdude was $155 without a rebate when I checked. Now it's $155 AFTER rebate. Am I going crazy?
Anyway, the fact is, I'm on a budget, and that extra money hurts. I'm a poor college student, remember? Looking at the two options provided, the 9600GT is at least comparable to the 8800 for $10 less (two and a half gallons of gas!) Comparisons between the two show frame rates that are NEARLY identical. One to five FPS loss depending on the game doesn't matter much. So my decision is to go with the cheaper 9600GT and hope I don't regret it.
If I had a permanent, and not a summer, job, I'd get the 4850 no doubt :thumb:

If you go with a pair of HD4850s, remember to get a good motherboard. I recently read an article that showed a significant difference (10-30%) between p45 and x48 mobos.
