I've seen a lot of these threads elsewhere, but a search of TTLG yielded no local results. (Of course, I may have missed something obvious). My usual threads asking for help get long, so I'm gonna be straight. Which should I buy:
(

versus
(
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814145152) This 9600GT
Highlights (i.e., major differences):
9600GT $144.99
8800GT $154.99
9600GT 700MHz Core Clock
8800GT 600MHz Core Clock
9600GT 64 Stream Processors
8800GT 112 Stream Processors
9600GT 2000MHz Memory Clock
8800GT 1800MHz Memory Clock
9600GT OpenGL 2.1
8800GT OpenGL 2.0
Btw, this time I'll actually buy it. All my other 'which is better' threads never happened, but this one... It shall... It shall! Ahaha!

dont bother with either of them...
Ati Radeon HD 4850 (
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102747) NewEgg
$155
625 Core clock
800 Stream Processors
2000ghz Memory Clock
OpenGL 2.1
DirectX 10.1
This is a current gen card and smashes both the 8800GT/9600GT, in CrossFire mode they are as fast as a $500 nvidia GTX280. And the card will happly overclock to 700mhz core and 2220ghz memory.

I may be remembering my numbers wrong, but I'm sure I read that the 8800GT is superior to the 4850 and the 9600GT is on par with it.

You're dead wrong, the 4850 beats the 9800GTX. In that price bracket, the 4850 is the best card hands down.

I actually just bought an 8800 GT. So far, very happy! I look forward to playing Bioshock/Stalker/Witcher now that my computer can handle them.

a short note:
don't buy a HD4xxx (and any HDxxxx) if you're going to play Dark Engine games with it (with ddfix) - massive fps drops in various places in-game (esp. in XP) will make the games unplayable (drivers are borked).
not sure about these drops on Nvidia 8xxx+.

Er Hiatus..
Its not a good idea to to make sweeping statements, as I don't recollect seeing that many other people with HD series Ati cards with that prob.:p
And with regards to 8xxxx owners, its not a problem. See my ddfix thread :thumb:

I'm afraid I'm not making it up - there IS a huge problem with DE games and ATI HDxxxx - fps is abysmal in many situations (and no, it's NOT ddfix fault - same thing with vanilla versions -> ATI drivers/hardware is borked making things horribly slow):

(

and a few other people with HDxxxx's in the same thread [ (

The issue is not that prominent/widespread on this forum YET because, let's be frank, HD2xxx/HD3xxx were not popular chipsets for well-known reasons, and now with HD4xxx getting much more popular than its predecessors, this issue will become more and more prominent in time - just wait and see (people coming to this forum with the same issue).

Hmm I see what you mean, I really want to get a HD 4xxx card/s because they are good cards and I dont want to give nvidia any money this time round.
I havent seen anyone with a HD 4xxx card in that or this forum yet, I am looking at buying one, so I'll look into buying one under the 7 day dsd and come back here with my findings.
