Although Max 5 installed ok, the 5.1 update completely refused to install on 64 bit Windows 7, so I eventually got around to installing XP mode and seeing if it would install within that. It did, but still didn't fully function - I might have got there with further and fiddling about but I was practically ready to throw the machine out the window a few times when I decided to try something.
I don't know if it'll work for anyone else, but for me installing and activating v5, then installing v5 and the 5.1 update within a virtual machine, then renaming the installation in the main OS and copying in the one from the virtual machine has worked a treat :D
