Giving up the funk weed was much easier than giving up nicotine or caffeine. I went back to caffeine though as I didn't have a good enough excuse to stay off it. I wouldn't smoke large amounts in one go and an eighth of an ounce would last just over a week, but I took it virtually every night for about 20 years.
The only withdrawal I had was when I kept waking up in the middle of the night restless as fuck. There would be this incredible itch but nothing to scratch. I eventually came clean to my doc' who put me on a course of diazepam for 2 weeks. The withdrawal didn't even last that long and I still have the packet of diazepam with two in.
Nevertheless I kept thinking what would Popeye Doyle have done in The French Connection part 2. God, that overdose/cold-turkey sequence is one of the best scenes ever in film so I wanted it to be more like that.
