The problem is, people tend to simplify their stances.
Anyone who argues against legalisation, even those who aren't against it but are simply trying to have a meaningful discussion about possible dangers get swept away by being called "square" - sure, cannabis has NO effect whatsoever, it's basically like drinking water! Whatever.
As has been said, this has little impact on the legal debate, as there are already precedents for legal activities (smoking and drinking) which have similar negative effects. But let's not be obtuse; all of these things do have negative effects (wow, so does drinking too much coffee in too short a time, or taking too many sleeping tablets), whether or not some are worse than others.
I think everyone here recognises that whilst clearly not worthy of the blanket moral demonisation as evident in some quarters of the media, cannabis is not without its effects on people, short and long term.
As for whether I personally think it should be legalised, the answer is yes; schemes in the UK where police have blind-eyed or taken less harsh stances on the stuff have been very effective at countering harder drugs which do cause more problems.

SD's just living in a happy bubble of inkhorn, wealthy suburb smoking. Fragile people do get messed up with the stuff. Doesn't mean they have no understanding of what's happening, and what happens after marks the difference between strong people and the others.
Oh behave. I don't live in a wealthy suburb. Once upon a time it was, as the size of my house will testify, but these days it is a fairly poor area.
And let me tell you, I ain't worried about the potheads - it's the smackheads and the alcoholics who roam the streets, imploring me for change with their toothless grins, who put me on edge.

It was an altogether unpleasant evening.

I've never smoked it (not against it, just never sidled up to anyone that does), and don't care for the smell, and would prefer that the young suburban chuckleheads keep their hands off of it, and wonder if this would make it easier for them to get it. Also, stoner humor isn't funny to me.
I also have a friend, now deceased, who was schizophrenic and also smoked weed, and it made his symptoms worse. He was later imprisoned (for theft and possession of weed) and beaten to death by a fellow inmate in jail.
I'm totally for legalization. I want it to just barely pass, and I want every tight-ass who votes against it to scream bloody murder afterward, while I get my first burn on.

Also, as a form of smoking, it's not something I want to be around when I'm in a restaurant etc. either. So keep it in your own home.
This reminded me of something- since regulated companies could be allowed to sell marijuana, would they be allowed to sell it in other forms, i.e. pot-brownies? You could certainly dodge a hell of a lot of the 'it's bad for your lungs' business but it might infringe on the 'doing it in public' business.

The new Sarah Lee PLUS line. I bet the packaging and the marketing plan is already in place (but stashed in a safe deposit box).
If pot were available in clubs and they were required to shut off the booze taps, switching to pot after midnight, the problem of weekend urban rowdyism and violence would virtually evaporate overnight.
About the worst things the cops would have to deal with would be people severely bummed out because the Buck'a'slice Pizza place was all sold out.

The biggest problem with weed is that the uptight sanctimonious twats who need it most are exactly the type who never smoke it.
So do you smoke weed regularly?
Starrfall on 27/3/2010 at 01:17
If we're doing anecdotes, someone in my law school class smoked weed every day during law school and graduated in the top ten percent, then continued to smoke every day while studying for (and taking, and passing) the bar exam, and now smokes weed every day while holding down a respectable job.
Denigration of society in action, folks!
