(
http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2010/0325/Now-on-the-ballot-could-marijuana-legalization-happen-in-California) California to vote (
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/26/us/26pot.html) on legalizing pot
Quote:
The measure, certified Wednesday by California Secretary of State Debra Bowen, would:
* Allow people age 21 years or older to possess, cultivate, or transport marijuana for personal use.
* Permit local governments to regulate and tax commercial production and sale of marijuana to people 21 years old or older.
* Prohibit people from possessing marijuana on school grounds, using it in public, smoking it while minors are present, or providing it to anyone under 21 years old.
* Maintain current prohibitions against driving while impaired.
It has a reasonably good chance of passing: 56% are in favor as of a April 2009 poll. AND everyone against it sounds like such a goddamned square no one would want to associate with them anyways.
Quote:
They tick off a list of social ills — including tardiness and absenteeism in the workplace — that such an act would contribute to.
“We just don’t think any good is going to come from this,” said John Standish, president of the California Peace Officers Association, whose 3,800 members include police chiefs and sheriffs. “It’s not going to better society. It’s going to denigrate it.”
Whereas the people in favor speak the truth.
Quote:
Still, the idea of legal marijuana does not seem too far-fetched to people like Shelley Kutilek, a San Francisco resident, loyal church employee and registered California voter, who said she would vote “yes” in November.
“It’s no worse than alcohol,” said Ms. Kutilek, 30, an administrator at Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco. “Drunk people get really belligerent. I don’t know anybody who gets belligerent on marijuana. They just get chill.”
Even my dentist is in favor of it. So now of course I suspect he smokes. Which is a-ok with me, because he's great.
The arguments against legalizing pot are on about the same level as the arguments against gay marriage. I'll be down as a "yes," and won't be surprised if this thing passes in November.

Stoned dentist:cool:
Watching this 'battle' with utmost interest and hoping national legalization hurry's the fuck up. Hopefully they don't completely botch it and their reputation like with healthcare. Hopefully they remember they're 'representatives' this time and not dictators...fat chance though no doubt, so don't expect passage any time soon.

Here's something I was in favor of even when I was a Christian pastor, mainly because it would alleviate a huge strain on the criminal justice and prison systems. Also because, for fuck's sake, who does it hurt?

I can hardly stand the stuff for myself, but 'yes' all the way.

I'm betting on the Nov. 2nd election having the highest voting rates ever.

Haven't touched it in over four years, but hell yeah legalize it. Also tax the hell out of it and use all the tax revenue for California OneCare (assuming that can manage to pass and not get vetoed this go round).

I'm betting that there'll be a massive turnout on the following day. "Dude, whut do you mean the poll's closed?"
Legalize that crap and tax it. It's like alcohol, but stinkier. Also without the liver damage, vomiting, and occasionally fatal withdrawal symptoms due to physical addiction.
BTW I can't use it at all. Makes me itch. Secondhand doesn't bother me though.

The prison industry and the drug cartels. So yeah, legalize it, tax it. There's no good argument not to.
