My first machine without the use of a Sound Blaster Card.
My specs:
Windows 7 64 bit
ATI Radeon Sapphire R9 series
On board Realtek High Definition Audio
5.1 Creative Inspire speakers
I installed Thief Gold and updated it with TFix. I'm using OPENAL hardware acceleration and everything works fine but the REAR speakers just dont seem to work. I can hear faint audio coming from them in the game but not what I would call 3d positional audio. I can't hear the guards coming from behind me and what not. Upon the desktop configuration I can CLEARLY hear each speaker as it goes through the tests. Other games 3d audio works flawlessly as well. But for some reason with thief gold the rear speakers dont do much more than ambient.

check your speakers are configured for 5.1 and not 7.1. In 7.1 the rears would setup as side speakers.

No, I have the only audio manager (realtek) as having them set to 5.1 and the test comes out great as I am able to hear all channels EXACTLY where they should be. I only get the front 3 speakers (left, right and center) working when I play thief gold and thief 2.
Skyrim works perfect.
World of Warcraft works perfect.
No thief.
Is there anyway to enable EAX without the use of OpenAL?

* Those games dont use EAX.
* have you tried selecting EAX in-game..? that said OpenAL should work even on the realtek.

... I'm using OPENAL hardware acceleration ...
I thought the last OpenAl with hardware acceleration died a long-long time ago (why would one even use it? OpenAL-soft hes more effects and less limitations).

All I know is every machine I've built with Sound Blaster cards (3 within the last 12 years). Have all had surround sound with thief and thief 2. This is the first computer I've built without a Soundblaster card and I can FAINTLY hear some audio coming out of the back but hardly at all. AGAIN I have the levels for all speakers as they should be and I've tried cranking the rears up through Realtek's settings.
I have tried the game without the hardware acceleration and the same thing happens no rear audio (not really anyway.)

Off the top of my head the only other thing I can suggest is doing some research regard Realtek drivers for the realtek sound chip on that mobo. Ive heard of some driver not having proper surround support etc.

Did you try this?

I helped my to get proper 5.1 surround sound on my laptop's realtek chip. If I remember correctly I used OpenAL in the game options.
