My friend just called me up. He used his girlfriend's laptop to buy something online and, once he'd done it(!), thought "hmmm, this computer is really slow".
Turns out she's been using it for a year with no anti-viruses or anti-malware package. Safemode was the only way to get to the AVG website (it was blocked, as were loads of MS pages) and now that AVG is installed he's found 238 different viruses/problems on the machine.
I blame him because, you know, women and technology and all that (:p), but regardless - that is an insane number of issues, is it not?

Using a computer without any protection nowadays is just plain stupid. Although such a high number could mean he was going to lots of porn and\or torrent sites

:nono:....why?

It's his girlfriend's laptop. He doesn't usually use it so no, he's not being "going to porn sites" on it - he uses his own laptop for that I'm sure. Are you mad?
I blame him because he should have, imho, made sure she had protection on it ages ago.

Dude, it's Azaran. He's still in high school. Things go past him sometimes. Cut him a break, he can't help if his teachers haven't taught him reading comprehension because American education is in the shitter.

Since when did I cut breaks?
stop these ridiculous rumours

If you want to buy something over the internet, i'd advise having a linux live cd just for this task (even if your main install is linux).

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to make sure.
Get him to format the sucker, reinstall, get AVG/avast on there the moment Windows is up and running again. People just need a little hand-holding and some edyookayshun, is all.

She should be responsible for her own protection. ;)
It depends what the 238 consisted of. I'd imagine there were a load of tracking cookies which wouldn't be surprising. He should do some online scans as well if it's back in business. It is amazing how many people don't bother to try and find out the basics. My sister-in-law didn't even know about cleaning and defragging.

And most importantly with no brain. You don't get viruses and malware just by browsing Facebook.
