A long time from now still... but when Jay Leno retires from the Tonight Show in 2009, Conan O'Brian will take over. Although, he's gonna have to tone down some of the raunchier humor for the more "family" oriented late night show.
(So what if this is "old news"... it's still "new" to some...)

By 2009 I will rule the universe and the only late night telvision show will feature John Stewart.
Why would they even begin making plans for this when it's almost 4 years away? Anything can happen in four years.

Actually, in 2009 the american civil war will be in full swing almost, and I will be busy constructing my nuclear bunker 6 years in advance...

I never thought it would happen. It's always been Jay then Conan, both hilarious but two different things. AND! Half of Conan's jokes are about Jay too! At least he has 5 years to think up some new content.

I'm skeptical of what this will do to Conan when he moves to the Leno slot. Part of the reason why they can get away with all that goofy stuff on his show is because it's at a timeslot the network really doesn't care about.
But the Tonight Show? That's an entire legacy. I could see NBC dropping all kinds of busybodies on the set to make sure it conforms to whatever image the suits have convinced themselves they need to maintain.

I see Conan on the Tonight Show as Letterman is on the Late Show. More mature, less goofy, so the highs aren't as high, but still consistently witty, because there's only so much you can do to reign in a good comic mind. Letterman's not edgy any more, but he's still got a sophisticated wit that shines through, even if he has been mailing it in for almost a decade now.
And anything is better than that schlockfest of crap that Leno puts on on a nightly basis.
It's hard to believe that this is truly a voluntary thing on Leno's part, he's being pushed out because they know that Conan's worth more to them than he is. Shame it's going to be 17 years too late.
Stewart makes the leap as soon as Koppel or Letterman retire. (If he replaces Nightline it might be the best thing that ever happened to Jimmy Kimmel, and quite possibly the only thing that might save his show). At which point Comedy Central will be 3 hours of South Park a week and a barren fuckin' wasteland of crap programming the rest of the time.

Specifically 3 hours of South Park and 21 hours of MadTV.

I think this is great news. I love Jay, but Conan is awesome. If I was in control, I would replace David Letterman with Conan O'Brien effective immediately. I used to like Letterman, but lately his attempts at comedy have been very lame. I just think he's getting old and crusty. I mean, good grief. The Hula-hoop Girl and the Grinder Girl? WTF? Is this supposed to be funny? That whole "Is This Something?" sequence is dumb. Even the famous Top Ten list just isn't that funny any more. And if I see that old gray-headed guy get naked again, I'm going to puke. I think Letterman's been holed up in a studio too long.
Leno, by contrast, is very attuned to his audience. His genuine laugh and his goofy personality is contaigious. He is way more aware of current events and trends.
Conan has got to be the funniest man on late night TV. I'm laughing my ass off every time he's on.

Johnny Carson begs to differ.
Jay Leno isn't fit to carry Johnny's jock. He's everything that's wrong with middle-of-the-road, middle-class, Middle America humor. Honestly, the guy stopped being funny the
minute he became the full-time host.
