This past weekend (yeah, I'm just now getting around to it--been lazy) we took the kids to our yearly outing: The Michigan Renaissance Festival. Now, we've been going to this damned thing for sixteen years (used to dress up in period clothes even) and as usual one should expect some bit of weirdness, but this is getting ridiculous.
Since WHEN did trashy, slut pirate have anything to do with the Renaissance?I have had my fill of seeing ugly, tattooed, misshapen tits billowing out of ill-fitting customs that are a cross between Zena the Warrior Princess and The Happy Hooker. And, to add to it, let's dye our obnoxious little poodles hot-pink and stick some fairy wings on 'em.
I don't get it. The festival is no longer about the period and the spirit: it's about how freaky one can dress up. Maybe it's to show their individuality, yet there's nothing individual about it.
The festival has been going downhill for the past few years, ironically as its popularity rises. And, this notion of just being outright silly really started to come to a head last year when they were filming that damned movie (All's Faire in Love); here came the local trash from the area, decked out in furs, leather, vampire garb, and Wizard skins to try and get there toothless grins in the film. UGH! The festival is no longer fun as it's simply become a sea of people just trying to be seen and get their five fucking minutes of notoriety.
Speaking of being seen: Yes, 'tis I, drug up on stage with Tartanic, for a few moments of ridicule. What started out as a lesson in dancing a Scottish Jig devolved into a rather poor Can-Can. Or, should I say, Couldn't-Couldn't. Note that I no longer dress up.

Try holding the one just a wee-bit smaller over your head while he beats the hell out of it--great sound!

Lol, a Renaissance festival.

I wasn't aware chivalric knights were a large element of the renaissance either.

I thought it was about putting on your robe and wizard's hat.

Question is, if I wore a sporran as big as that guy's and did myself a jig, would my balls hurt as much as his seem to be?
Also: Go-Go Queue! <3

Hah, go Queue go! I'm a Renn junky. The faire here in Dallas is one of the best. Great people, ALL kinds of costumes. Decent food, not too overly priced, drinks, and fun shows to watch. Its a good time, every year.

I noticed a similar thing when it came to Halloween in Greenwich Village ... which is a lot more about transvestites owning the night than anything to do with halloween.
Fortunately my old hometown Renn Fest, as BA just noted, is still one of the best. And I acted in a Madrigal play for a while (UTexas's Madrigal Dinner); I've always been around this sort of thing.
And what the hell, if we're posting photos:
