He's been using a Kaoss pad in one of his guitars for some years now, certainly had it when I saw them live two years ago.
According to last month's guitarist magazine he's just had another new one built for him thats meant to be particularly special.

It's still a gimmick. It would be way more useful, if it was a separate piece operated by their keyboardist or something.

He is, for my money, not a "great guitarist" in the sense that it is all about showmanship and flamboyance, effects and style over substance. But then, you could denigrate Muse as a band pretty effectively that way too. I'm not that hard on them, but they're hardly my favourite.

I don't like how he's constantly touted as some amazing guitarist. What he's good at is combining influences from afar and overall songwriting.

He's more virtuosic than the average guitarist in the visible mainstream of popular music, certainly. You know, compared to Noel Gallagher or someone. But yes, if it's insane shredding you want, he's not really up there. And he's equally not up there with someone like Johnny Marr or Greenwood in terms of interest, for me. A bit "Malmsteen lite" at worst.
I'm sounding like some kind of Muse hater, I'm not and they do have a great sound, live presence and he has written some very good songs.

I'd choose Noel over Matt any day cus Matt has no feel.

I actually thought they sucked until I saw the video to 'Knights of Cydonia', then I was charmed.

Great bands need to stay in the past where they were a vital part of the moment, nobody needs to see fatter and older rockstars rolling out their hits by the yard, a good twenty years removed from the headspace in which they were written.
I mostly agree with this, except some of the greatest albums IMO are the ones by bands who continue to record NEW material after their heyday without a "moment in time" or fad to rely on anymore - it pushes them to better songwriting it seems.
For example, Yes was all but over when they recorded the excellent Open Your Eyes and Homeworld - a good 20 years after Fragile, and at least 15 since their 80's revival with Trevor Rabin. Perhaps it was because they weren't worried about trying to sound modern or relevant, but just writing good songs.
The same is true for Rush (Counterparts, Test for Echo, Vapor Trails), Dream Theater (6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Train of Thought), or even cheesball people like Kip Winger who's recent "world music" albums kick Peter Gabriel's ass all over the planet. Hell, Iron Maiden has done their best work on the last three albums in the 00's (excepting possibly Power Slave) when no one was even paying attention anymore. I would also cite some of Sting's solo offerings but people start throwing things at me...
The only bad thing about these groups continuing to exist is the inevitable dragging out of the old hits for people who aren't even really fans of the group except for what they heard on the radio ten years ago. They should tell those people to get bent and just play what they want because the people still buying the albums could usually care less about that stuff anyway.
