There's been an amazing amount of exciting stuff going on! The now house-hold bands Franz, Muse, Placebo made albums and are/will tour. There's also The Prodigy and even bloody Faith No More! Generall, festival lineups look really marvellous, especially the medium-sized ones.
Veering off to more obscure stuff, there's been more nice post-rock albums this year than the last year in it's whole.
Agreed?

Not really. Most big bands have whiffed severely on their new discs, treading water at best (Franz, Green Day, Killers, U2, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Prodigy and Faith No More once sounded like the future and have therefore dated terribly, and the Muse disc is still missing in action.
There's been a lot of great stuff in smaller bands, though--Animal Collective, St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear, etc., so that's good. And sweet god I can't wait for the new HEALTH in September.
Also new Beasties this fall, might be worth a look.
As for live music, the Dan Deacon/Deerhunter/No Age tour about to hit Madison has me chewing on my teeth in anticipation.

Fair enough, albeit U2 has been passé for ages :p Faith No More is as good as ever though - I'd say at least Patton is in amazing shape. Also really looking forward to Porcupine Tree.

Completely agree. Even thought there's some natural overhyping going on with pitchfork-bands like Animal Collective, it's easy to see it's not only because of that. There's also, ISIS, The Field + quite a few nice Finnish albums I won't bother mentioning here.
Also new Beasties this fall, might be worth a look.

I'm seeing Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds next weekend, which I am glad of. After summer there's Muse and Porcupine and God Is an Astronaut.
But yeah, post-rock. From Monument to Masses and (

Great Albums From '09 so far:
Giuseppe Ielasi - Aix
Tosca - No Hassle
The Field - Yesterday and Today
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Taylor Deupree - Weather and Worn (well okay it's just a 7" but I love it)
Mountains - Choral
And I guess Animal Collective, but I haven't really been able to get so into it—past 'My Girls', that is—I can't help but compare it to Person Pitch, which I like more.
And there's probably lots more. On the radar (as in, I have downloaded but not listened) are Tim Hecker, Sun 0))), James Blackshaw, St Vincent, Seaworthy, and probably more (it's not as though I have a real life or anything—my band is doing well, by the way). Isn't Tortoise releasing a new album this year?
Going to Sled Island in Calgary in a few weeks, featuring LIARS OMG, HEALTH, Women, Japandroids, Chad VanGaalen, Breeders, Holy Fuck and DID I MENTION LIARS ARE PLAYING TWO SHOWS so I haven't really heard too many of these guys but I'm boning up for the festival.
So far it really hasn't been a bad year at all.

Great:
P.O.S. - Never Better
Excellent hip-hop fused with punk. Goes all avant garde n shit in all the right places.
Good:
Iggy Pop - Preliminaries
I've never been into the guy before but when he opens this album with a soft spoken French ballad I'm thinking he's changed enough that I need to reevaluate him. Very nice stuff this, sonically at least. Lyrically he's a poor man's Tom Waits.
Brother Ali - The Truth is Here
Wonderful beats and angry vocals.
Mediocre:
DOOM :(
Bob Dylan
themselves
Marilyn Manson
Diana Krall
Bad:
Franz Ferdinand (I liked Lucid Dreams tho)
Eminem
best songs:
Bat for Lashes - Daniel
UGK - Da game been good to me
Bruce Springsteen - The Wrestler
DOOM - Cellz
Bob Dylan - Forgetful Heart
still gotta make my mind up about: Bat for Lashes, Bike for Three, Zu, Eels, UGK

I have to agree with those saying it has been dissapointing in general. The few shining lights for me have been: Peaches, Grizzly Bear, Doom, Black Lips, and Andrew Bird's releases.
Conor Oberst's new album is easily the biggest dissapointment. Ever. It's fucking horrendous.
Lucid Dreams is pretty solid, especially the start, it drags a little towards the end for me.
The Mars Volta's new release in June, along with the forthcoming health release is probably what 09 will hinge on for me.

Alice in Chains are back but everywhere they're playing they seem to be supporting shitty old Metallica.
The eternal Neil Young is on another tour!!!!!!!!

So far, highlights =
Dan Deacon: 'Bromst' (electro-wonk from the nicest paedo ever)
Horrors: 'Primary colours' (death-rock plunderers progress chronologically into nihilistic post-punk, but its still awesome)
Micachu: 'Jewellery' (jangly DIY skronk chirp that should set your fucking teeth on edge but is somehow extremely charming)
Final Fantasy: 'Heartland' (not out yet, but I have seen the bulk of it live and it is quite the business)
I am also sure that the new Future of the Left (Welshies singing some kind of really dirty power-pop, notable past efforts include the unforgettable chorus 'sausage on a stick!!!' from the song 'Wrigley Scott') will be worth listening to.
HEALTH I was really looking forward to, but I saw them live recently and they were gits!
