New video "Constant Motion" (
http://www.roadrun.com/DreamTheater_ConstantMotion_LARGE.mov) here
At the risk of getting pummeled for listening to slightly glammy, masturbatory prog-metal featuring a singer with no discernible sign of having testicles, I must ask if anybody else has followed this band (?). Seems like I remember some discussion about them a few years ago, but I wasn't paying attention.
Anywho, I just got the new 'Score' DVD featuring a small orchestra (a terrible orchestra btw), and I was surprised by some of the songs I wasn't very familiar with. Upon further research I decided to grab the last few discs - 'Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence', 'Train of Thought,' and 'Octavarium'. All amazing in their own right for the complexity and patience of the arrangements (not to mention the jaw-dropping musicianship). Other than wishing the vocalist would shut the hell up most of the time, I've really been enjoying them, and the Score DVD is pretty good to.
IIRC I lost track of these guys when they did a concept album called 'Metropolis Part 2' back in the early 00's and I just couldn't follow it - lyrically or musically. Now I kind of wish I'd hung on a bit longer b/c the follow-ups were great.
I especially recommend 'Train of Thought' if you like old-school Metallica, Megadeth, Tool, or Neurosis. Really heavy and to the point without all the flashy crap they're known for.

I've been a fan of some sort of the band in question for several years. I've got all eight of their albums so I must like their music then. Then came Spock's Beard, and that was that. Then I discovered Neal Morse! :D
What do you think of Octavarium yourself? I thought it was a bit different from their earlier music in terms of style and drums.

Not too big on Octavarium - too 'varied' to sink into IMO. I do like Spock's Beard and I've been into Porcupine Tree for awhile. I need to get some more Spock's Beard though. I like Morse's music, but not to keen on his voice for some reason...

I'll poke a good friend of mine Leatherman about this. He *loves* Dream Theater. I know he has an opinion or two about them.
Bands of choice lately are, newer Porcupine Tree, if you haven't heard them, they're good. Sent a track of theirs to Mortal Monkey, surprised him even.
Throw in some Ayreon, what a mix.

I've enjoyed Dream Theater since their 2nd album Images and Words, but I kinda drifted away from them for a while. Train of Thought reignited my interest, and I'm a bigger fan now than ever. Score is a great live album, though mostly for hardcore fans. :thumb:
Octavarium is an interesting and overall excellent album, but like was mentioned it was too varied, so it's easy to lose interest. Along with Images and Words, Metropolis Pt 2 is one of my favorite albums of all time, as is Six Degrees.
Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Ayreon, and Opeth :ebil: are my favorite bands at the moment. Their side projects are pretty good as well. If you follow these bands you know several members of the bands have all collaborated with each other in some way or another. :)
I've heard some Spock's Beard and didn't really care for it (not a fan of Symphonic Prog), but for all Prog Rock/Prog Metal fans I highly recommend you give Riverside a listen. :thumb:

I have Suspended Animation (The guitarists solo album) and I love the shit out of it, my brother has all the Dream Theater and I was going to get it from him. TBH I would just prefer more solo shit but I dont think there is any.

You should look for Liquid Tension Experiment. Also check out Jordan Rudess' (the keyboard player's) solo albums, Rhythm of Time and Feeding the Wheel to name a few.
Sidenote: Rudess has the most interesting (

John Myung (bass player for DT) is in a side project called 'The Jelly Jam' (previously known as 'Platypus' and also featuring Derrik Sherinan) with Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs), and Ty Tabor (King's X). Good stuff - kinda like a prog version of the Beatles at times.

I'd hate to use my second post as something negative, but I absolutely cannot stand this band.

Thanks for the update, chief!
I enjoy them, as they are some mind-blowing musicians, but the vocals don't really do it for me. Their songs are well crafted, though, so I listen to them occasionally anyways.
