I want to build a go-kart from scratch and mess around with it until it's really pimp (forced induction, modified timing, the works) and to make the kart even more powerful I want to save on weight by going 2-cycle. Problem is, though I can find plenty of 4 stroke engines for sale (small engine warehouse is good), I can't find any place that sells 2-stroke engines. There are a couple of very popular 2-stroke kart engines, by Yamaha for example and a couple others but I don't like them because they rev more than 10K RPM and I want something that makes HP from displacement and torque rather than rediculous RPM. I would have thought companies like B&S or Kholer would sell 2-strokes but I couldn't find any that would be suitable for my kart. I want the cart to be in the ~10 - 15 HP range. Are there any online stores that sell 2-stroke engines that aren't specifically for outboard engines or weed wackers or anything like that....just a good place to buy resonably powerful 2-cycles? Thanks for the advice.

East Germany

It's true. No, rather it was. Most cars in eastern Germany ran on these stinky wimpy machines. There certainly are a lot left but, I dunno, with shipping and all, this could get quite costly.
I've heard often enough that go-karts were built with used lawnmower machines? I guess one could get one cheaply from ebay/craigslist or whatever.
Anyway, I think this is an awesome idea and I thoroughly support it. The Rocketman needs his own speedy Mars explorer. :D
Speaking of cool things one can do with eastern German machines: I've learned to sew! I got a professional sewing machine here. (My mother was a tailor, sewed my new blue jeans.) Yesterday I figured it out, then I cut open several good shirts that I never wear though because they were presents and and much too large. I sewed them back together for fit again, with an overlook stitch, as it's meant to be. So satisfying to make something. In RL! Haha

Buy an old motorbike, take out the engine.

If the kart racing industry offers high-rpm two-strokes at fairly reasonable prices, couldn't you tame it a little with a serious muffling (dampening) system? I have to imagine that, if there are high-flow headers available on the market, there are quiet muffler systems for people who want to go the other direction with decibles. It sounds like you've got a shop and equipment at your disposal to scratch build this kart. Could you also build a custom muffler system?

What you really need are 10 to 15 horses.

These two criteria are pretty much mutually exclusive.
