ooooh, interesting ideas there Dr_Octogon; my take on
the one about Jon - if he isnt indeed Ned's bastard, and is infact a true Targaryen - then this raises some curious stories now that Jon Snow is
a) being offered Winterfell by Stannis (Even though we are led to believe he says no thanks to the start of FFC chapter).
Moreso the fact that Lord Snow was designated heir to the North's throne by Robb. Then when Dany arrives on the shores; she recognises Jon as a fellow Targ, marries him (inbreeding, inmarriage was after all popular with them); thus the nightwatch becomes hers and breaks their vows; she conquers Westeros then we have the battle with the Others who will (PREDICTION TIME: destroy the Wall).
*smokes some more*
Ignatios: first off, i'm sorry for that spoilage - momentary lapse of concentration on my part. second, ive fixed my post - you might want to fix your quote for other folks benefit. third, yeah - stop reading the thread till you finished the book :thumb:

I kinda think the Wall will come down some time before Dany arrives in Westeros. Just going by the stories we've been told of the Others before. They've always kicked humanity's arse before being beaten back.

Speaking of Dany:
Did any pick up not-massively-subtle War on Terror parallels from her chapter?
~ Trying to keep a political grasp on a 'liberated' city which still retains some loyalty to the old regime.
~ Her massive, efficient war-machine is next to useless against the small guerilla strikes being made.
~ The two distinct brands of advice she's getting about how to deal with the problem (nuke 'em all vs HEARTS AND MINDS).
~ Guilt about civilian casualties? (nyom nyom, tasty children!)
~ The last city where she toppled some corrupt rulers has rapidly gone back to being just as shitty for the general populace as before.
Seriously people, what's with the George Martin hype? Having two R.-s to stick between his named doesn't make you as good as Tolkien despite the visual trick.

You can't mistake GRRM for JRRT.
Some of his female characters are halfway believable.

yes, because what makes GRRM and Tolkein great is the fact that they had really cool names...
on topic:
probably just me being confused as usual; but it just dawned on me that the chap Sam meets at the end of FFC is Jaquen H'gar posing as Pate - the POV from the first chapter - despite my being dead correct on my predictions happening as I read the book (notably Cersei's pwnage by the High Septon and the Maester's being not as good-as-we-all-thought-in-terms-of-magic-etc); I cannot see why this is important.
I mean, the first chapter just seemed to sit there on its own; how was it connected to the overall story since the POV guy Pate was killed by Jaquen H'gar at the end of chapter 1....does this mean Sam and Jaquen H'gar are goign to become best buds.
Also; Arya spends ages worrying and missing Jon Snow - yet when she meets Sam; a sworn brother from the Wall she doesnt even ask him squat about his Lord Commander...weird.
oh, and Arya = blind = master stroke. the little urchin was doing WAY too well for someone in her situation.

MMM, FRESH SPOILERS
It's important because Jaquen H'gar (and it seems likely it is him, his last 'face' matches the face of the Alchemist) now has a key which enables him to go anywhere in Oldtown, due to Pate's desperation for some hot hot lovin'.
Quite WHY he's chilling out there, I don't know.
Also someone smarter than me pointed out that Alleras is Sarella spelt backwards. There's an earlier clue to this, as Sarella is said to be 'playing games' in Oldtown .. somewhere. Zomg!
