2 weeks left. Well, for those in the UK anyway.
I'm currently halfway through Steel and Snow, being the first part of Storm of Swords and am amazed at how much detail I'd missed on my first time through these books. Segments such as Dany at the House of the Undying in Qarth are so much more powerful upon a re-read and I found myself predicting parts of the plot that I'd forgotten occurred such as Selmy going to Dany. In fact, upon a rereading, many of the prominent take-note points are related to Dany.
Anyway, GRRM is going to be in Glasgow on 22nd October and I'll be getting a few copies of the Hardback FfC signed, as well as asking him one or two pointed questions. Hoping that he'll not rebuff me with a smile and wink... I heard he can be quite pleasant with the fans and often goes out for a drink with them and suchlike. Don't know if I'd go that far, but it'd be good to let him run on for a bit... maybe give away a few details about the next book.
Looking forward to this one anyway, it'll be awesome. Although dealing with only half the plot will kill me. :(

He's going to BASINGSTOKE and not the capital of Wales? Pah! Pah I say! I may get the Megabus to London for the signing there, possibly... I could get a return now for a tenner.
Ah well, still looking forward <3ily to the book!

I can see it now:
Scots_Taffer: *grinning* So George, can you tell me anything about the next book?
GRRM: *grinning* Yes. Its called A Dance with Dragons.
Scots_Taffer: *grinning* I see. Can you tell me who will be in it?
GRRM: *grinning* Yes. *picks up a custard cream*
Scots_Taffer: *grinning* Right. So is there going to be any salsa in it? I mean, its
called a dance with dragons, so I'm just assuming the "dance" will be salsa.
GRRM: *grinning* Mmm...lovely custard creams here. *winks*
Scots_Taffer: *grinning* OMG!!! The dance with dragons is SALSA! GENIUS!
GRRM: *grinning* Really marvelous custard creams...
Scots_Taffer: *faints*
:thumb:
In all seriousness though; at first I was a bit annoyed that he was cutting it in two both in plot and physically. But actually now I've had time to digest this, and re-read the previous books, it will work better this way.
We'll know stuff that happens in Dance with Dragons before reading it since the timelines will have to interact, and so he can just throw in an off-the-cuff mention about some event to tempt us with ADWD.

I've discovered my interest in this series is inversely proportional to the level of internet hype.

l've read the first two and l think the third  , and while l appreciate the lack of fantasy cliches so far- dragons excepted- l just got the feeling that martin is trying to hard to be 'street', to invert/subvert those selfsame cliches.

Can you try too hard to be hard in the brutal medieval jostle for power he has created? Real history is at least as bad. I do wish the fantasy stuff was ditched but I suppose he has done it well enough. Catelyns return from the dead irked me even still. Nevertheless I'm hopeful. I've likely put too much faith in the saga due to the long wait.
But damn, with the way he has manipulated me thus far it is difficult to doubt it will be interesting. How WILL he tie all the disparate elements into a pretty bow?
Ask him if Dany and Arya will mudwrestle, Scots.

I'm looking forward to something good to read again. Currently stumbling through some garbage by Ian Irvine D-:
