16 bit installers won't work... - by bokanov

I am trying to install SS2 off of the cd, but the setup.exe does nothing, even with the lgntforce thing appended. What I get is two processes in the task manager that have no ram allocated and no apparent function (wow and one other... this is the 16 bit emulator thiing I believe). How do I get this to work so I can install SS2?
Thanks

Try starting the installer and then leaving it, for anything up to an hour. For some reason the installer can take a while to kick in. (This is under XP 32 bit, if you're trying to install under Vista then I'm not sure what the situation is.)
If you want to make sure the installer is doing something, after starting it check your temp directory and see if files are being copied into it (such as splash screens etc).

Are you using 64bit Windows? They removed 16-bit support from both XP x64 and Vista x64. SS2 does have a 32bit installer, BTW.

Try to boot in Safe Mode, then run installer.

Ah yes, it is 64 bit xp. Where is the 32 bit installer?
(Gothik: I have noticed that if I let it sit for a while a setup box does pop up, but it doesn't do anything)
(note: I also have a linux install if this would be easier, and a 32 bit vista install)
UPDATE: It works on 32 bit vista. onward to the next problem! ;)

...
Inside 16-bit one, unfortunately. :(
There is trick to get 16-bit subsystem to run automatically when Windows starts, thought.
* Click on
Start->
Run. In opening dialog type "
regedit" (without quotation marks, of course) inside text box and click OK-button.
* Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon. Double click on
Userinit and add "
,win.com wowexec" to the end of the string.
* Reboot your computer.
