Apparently I'm supposed to be able to purchase an IL86 from this barkeep. But it's not available to me. I want it for the integrated scope. Is there a reason i can't obtain one?
While I'm at it, how do you use the PSO-1 scope? I've been lugging this thing around for the longest time and haven't been able to utililize it. Does it only fit certain guns and I just haven't come across one yet? Or is there some special way to attach it that I'm unaware of.
One last question: what would be the primary carrying weight to play this game. I've been making do with 30-34 out of 50. The only thing I keep in my inventory are 2 guns plus ammo and health. I havent bothered with the artifacts because my experience is they do more harm than good. Oh, yeah, I keep some scraps of food for those moments the eating utensils show up on the screen.

The Il-86 is available at barkeep sometimes; the weapons and equipment at traders available are different each time you visit them.
The PSO-1 scope will work on an Obokan and the Ak-74, but you get much better weapons later with scopes on them. You're supposed to be able to attach more of the weapon attachments to more things, but in the standard version of the game a lot of them don't work for whatever reason. You can either accept that as a quirk, or get this mod
(
http://stalker.filefront.com/file/Additional_Addons_Mod;77741) Additional Addons
which fixes that. I would highly recommend it, as it basically makes certain items in the game work as they should.
As for carry weight, I'm almost always at near 50 lbs. I carry around at least a few of most types of artifacts because they can always come in handy, but only if you have the right ones for the right situation. Experiment with the benefits and trade-offs (some artifacts negate the bad effects of others) and you'll find a combination that suits the situations you seem to encounter the most due to your playstyle.

Don't buy it, it's pretty common and you'll be able to pick it from corpses very soon. Also, I don't recommend it, it's just not that good. SIG 550 (real name) is much better. The bartender sells it too, at least will start to sell after some point.

It's for soviet weapons only. You just move it to the weapon slot AFAIR.

Good choice. You want to keep weight under 50kgs - you'll be able to cover vast distances by sprinting. The limit is 60kgs for majority of suits. If your weight is >50kgs you'll still be able to sprint, but MUCH shorter. There are two special suits that will allow to carry up to 70kgs and 80kgs AFAIR.

The error. They're helpful. You just must COMBO them wisely.
F.e. two Night Stars + two Mama's beads (4x5% bullet proof) + Sea Urchin (-30% radiation to compensate Night Stars radiation) will give you +20% 'undamageable' bullet proof. Now compare it to the bullet proof which suits give you. Medium class suit usually gives you 30-35% bullet proof. 20% bonus certainly wouldn't hurt :) Also suits quickly wear down and consequently their bullet proof lessens, but that 20% always will stay the same.
Bottom line: you should compensate radiation with anti-radiation artefacts. Also, don't wear health regeneration artefacts (like Soul, or Stone's blood) constantly as they have big negative effects, you should equip them only when you want to heal yourself ("health +200/400/600%" actually means SPEED OF HEALTH REGENERATION).

Thanks for all that info guys. I didn't realize that I had to "drag" the scope to my rifle in order to mount it. There is no mention of that in the booklet (that I could find).
I think this game needs to be played 3-4 times before it's really understood.

I started understanding it quite well on the 2nd runthrough, found many new things I never discovered before.
