Did I just get shit on by a breakfast pastry combatant?
And your answer to the question would be, what?

If you love it, why do you want it to change?
We love Thief for what it is, and don't want something else.
He didn't exactly say that he
wants it to change, to be honest. There are people in here who don't mind
some changes in the game - in fact I'm looking forward to what kind of new ideas they've got. Some changes will be bad, but some will be good. I think I'd be a bit disappointed if Thief 4 turned out to be a new TMA with nice graphics but nothing else new.

I read through the thread and what did I find? Anyone who dared to disagree with the petition being told that they're not a true fan or being aggressively and repeatedly accused of being a corporate shill. This is fandom at its utter worst, the kind of "devotion" you usually only see in CoD forums, and it's incredibly disappointing to see that this is what became of the Thief fans.
Maybe there are good people on this site as well, but a lot of you are just plain f*** vile.
So; you read through
one thread here at the Thief forums, did you? Your statement of '
Anyone who dared to disagree with the petition being told that they're not a true fan or being aggressively and repeatedly accused of being a corporate shill.' is so very wrong it almost makes my head spin. Yes, things have gotten rather heated in this particular thread, but if you didn't speed-read you'd have noticed that not everyone who disagrees with the petition is being told anything of the sort. Also, those tempers have long since cooled and calmness once again reigns. It's been stated and re-stated that we all realize we're
all entitled to our own opinions, and if you'd take the time to read through even a few of the other threads, not only in the T4 Anticipation forum but in the other Thief forums as well, you'd see that overall we consider ourselves to be a community - a family, even. And there's bound to be bickering and arguing and disagreements galore in any community or large family unit, but at the end of the day it's our love of the Thief games that unites us. Tempers flare, harsh words may be exchanged, but we get over it and move on. Obviously you didn't seem to notice that particular fact. We have sense of comraderie here at TTLG that you won't find on any other forum.
If you're that narrow minded as to take a few negative (albeit name-calling) posts and judge our community by those alone to the extent of harshly calling some of us 'vile', then imo it's probably a very good thing that that was your last post here.
Don't let the door hit you in the arse on your way out. G'bye.

I have no idea as to exact estimates, but I agree that it might seem like a lot of the people who signed will buy the game anyways. It is sort of a shame if it does happen, if everyone who signs the petition was to commit to pirating it if they feel like playing it, that would send a clear message to other game companies about how vital and powerful the fans are.
Just for the fun of it,

You're right, he didn't, but I figure he does since he actually objects to the petition to keep Stephen's voice, which takes effort. And of the other many changes that have been made he (or even she) doesn't complain about any of those either.
Don't get me wrong though, I like some changes too, but like The Rageaholic pointed out: Far too few old elements are retained, and Stephen's voice would at times cause the developers and level designers to reconstruct entire levels for his voice. If somebody doesn't complain about the voice change, I doubt they would complain about the rest of the changes.

Ahhh...now it sinks into my feeble mind what you meant!

WaffleWarrior - please don't advocate piracy of the game here for any reason, much less ask fans to commit to it. It's against the forum rules to encourage it. If you want to punish a company but still play its game, advocate waiting & buying it at a bargain bin or some other legal means, if you want.

It leaves a bad taste in my mouth when gamers try to control the artistic intent of the developer. They make games, and we have no obligation to play them or even like them. No one here is being forced to hand over money for the Thief reboot, so we have little to no business dictating how it is they build their game. Notice: Someone is going to jump down my throat, screaming about how we are consumers, so any developer should be happy to follow our advice and damn well appreciate it, but the truth is, constructive advice, and harping on something that WILL NOT CHANGE at this point, are two entirely different things.
Fallout 3 had an ending that many gamers, including myself, didn't particularly enjoy. Not because of how the story went, but because it ended, and the game wouldn't allow you back into the environment (as is a nice feature to have in an sandbox rpg). The team behind the game later changed this, adding DLC that expanded the ending, and let you go back into the game after its completion.
Something similar happened a few years later with Mass Effect 3, only in that case, gamers were whining but because of the ending mechanics, but because the 'story' didn't mean what they had envisioned. They complained loudly enough that the development team drastically altered their vision and changed the ending. Some players even went so far as to threatening them with a lawsuit. Because the developers made a game in the way they saw fit.
And now, this. Gamers (and I say this as one) are an extremely opinionated bunch. When it honestly starts to get dangerous, and a little scary, is when they feel they have the right to try and control certain aspects of the development process. Heads up: We are the consumers. We can chose to buy a product or not. We can make suggestions, of course, but that gets out of hand when people start up pointless petitions, threaten lawsuits, cook up mass boycotts, etc, all because a game isn't being made (or was made) different from how they wanted it to be.
Guys, let it go. I am honestly ashamed of the Thief community right now, for the childish behavior it's been displaying. I get you're upset Russell wasn't ultimately chosen, but bitching about it this far into development, when it would be far too expensive to go back and change everything, even if Squeenix wanted to, is petty. Not to mention, it's rude and insulting to Orzani, who I'm sure is thrilled with (what I believe is) his first major VG role as the main protagonist.
I saw Boot's post, and I sympathize with him/her greatly, because I'm already expecting a similar response to my own post. But this is my own 2cents, and if you don't like it, I guess that's the way it goes. I'll expect some sort of petition to get me, or at least my post, removed from the forum, post-haste ;)

There is quite a big difference between the two posts. You haven't called anyone f*** vile!

You don't feel the same and that's cool. For awhile things got really heated, but they've cooled down now. Nobody is going to jump down your throat. You're quite welcome to feel the way you do.
I feel quite passionately about trying to get Stephen back, but if you're happy with their decision...that's fine. :) There is no harm trying.
I like a lot of what I see about T4 artistically, but a lot of it puts me off too. In the end, if I like enough of the game I'll buy it...but if Stephen isn't in it...that's just one more reason for me to wait for the bargain bin. :)
Also, as I and a few others who have done voice work before have said...it is far from too late for them to bring Stephen in to loop the lines. Vocals are often one of the last things done.
