Agreed. There's always hope. So what if a post 'contradicts what EM have resolutely told us'; there are going to be conflicting stories and rumors until the game is finally released. Other similar situations have already been cited (in the T4 threads) wherein the petitions of fans have changed the minds of game production companies. So yes; the more we're told not to, the more we'll hope. If we're disappointed in the end, so be it. That only means that EM will lose out because word will spread and fewer people will be willing to spend money on buying the game.

Betrayal might be putting it on a little too strongly, but yeah. Keep making noise. You obviously won't be getting any help from the Eidos forums...
Yes, betrayal is too strong a word. It isn't like EM never seriously considered SR.
The official Thief forum is Eidos Montreal's forum. To whom is this petition addressed to?

Yes, hope is a good thing; its positive, its optimistic.
EM's own statement on the matter via their blog and video is not a conflicting story or a rumour though; that is my point.

1200 signatures is impressive, but it's nowhere near enough to get EM to stand up and take notice.
Yeah, I don't have much hope that the petition will change their minds. On the other hand, hundreds or thousands of taffers trashing the game for months before it even comes out is probably not what they want either. If the other aspects of the game aren't impressing people, and the buzz looks like their game is going to tank who knows what they'll do to try to save it. Not sure I'd want Stephen Russell back as a desperation move to try to save a bad or even mediocre game though.

I am not saying anything... I am repeating what EM have said.
Semantics really, repeating is saying. The point is thiefessa...we know all too well what EM have said, I find coming into the Petition thread and driving the nails in almost rude, intentionally or not. There really isn't any need to repeat it here. We get it, but we're not giving up until the very end.

The post above may very well offer hope; but it contradicts what EM have resolutely told us, no?
EM appear to be rife with contradictions. Resolution goes hand in hand with arrogance. They are closing their minds to the possibility of error. No decision can be absolute without all of the factors at hand. We were told over the years that they followed the forums, yet there have been instances lately where they appear curiously surprised that the fans were upset with their decisions...as if they hadn't been paying any attention to what fans have been saying on the forums at all.
Do you know why I think there was a disconnect for the devs when they paired Russell's voice with their new Garrett model? It's because they have watched Romano in person. This whole disconnect thing is in their own heads because they know the man and associate his voice with the body on the screen. THEY can't separate it. We on the other hand don't know Romano, we only know Garrett, so for us Romano is the disconnect because we expect the real Garrett's voice to come from the on screen representation.
Honestly, I think they had far too much time to work on this game. They had too much time to get lost in their own heads. Too much time to think.
It's time to put a real push on and get the petition out there.

You say that as if it's a bad thing.
I've already said this a thousand times before, but I'd rather them experiment, do their own thing, and maybe fail than try to replicate LGS' Thief and definitely fail. In other words, I don't consider them making their own game the way they like it to be a bad thing. So long as it's to their taste, and not something tailored to random market demographic based on Nielsen ratings or something equally as inane, it could very well end up pretty decent.
...if not a fair bit different than what you'd immediately expect.
That said, keep pushing the petition. As much as I'm open to EM's Thief rather than a continuation of 14 years of LGS' Thief, I would like to hear SR take up his old roles.

Well said. This thread is about the hope that there is hope we can change the collective minds of the powers-that-be at EM.

Yeah, but how do you know it's stripped down? Because of new feature X, random thing Y? Their inclusion isn't contrary to the core of Thief. At worst, assuming it is actually a good first person sneaker a'la Thief, they're flashy pointless distractions you'll never notice because you're playing in Classic Mode.

I wish they would've made their original IPs first, gotten all the major experimenting of a new company out of their system, before messing around with established and beloved niche universes. I was sick of their talk of Pillars of Gameplay for Deus Ex, as if it could be distilled so far. Thief is already distilled. It's poetry with scribbles in the margins, not long-winded prose to distill into Pillars of play. Distilling things into such vapid generalizations leaves way too much room to reinterpret and entirely miss the flash of lightning in the bottle in a mistimed blink of an eye.

Ah, yes.
*Classic Mode*.
I get the feeling that this "Mode" will go down in history as something not so pleasant. God help this new team. I am of two minds on the whole thing. Either they know something we dont know and are going to unleash some classic monster, or its like Horizon says, and they are suffering from delusions of grandeur. Either way, my friend, I shall be amused nonetheless.
