This:
"Uh. They're making a sequel to a series which began in 1998, after having already made a sequel to Deus Ex. Their current employment exists purely because of nostalgia. Poor reasoning, I call it. The mo-cap justification, perhaps less so - but we'll just have to see whether or not Nu-Garrett really is any more convincing because of it."
And no; the new voice of Garrett sounds wooden - like the actor is just reading from the script. Epic fail, afaic.
If EM was steadfast in not using Stephen Russell, they should've realized that our Sly could've done a much better job (than this new actor) and I'm sure he could've rearranged his schedule if EM had only asked.
:p

Yup, either Stephen or Slyfoxx.

Signed.
EM explanation is... very unconvincing.

I signed it for the sake of it. But to be honest I don't care as it is a reboot.
If this were a true 'reboot' he wouldn't have the mechanical eye. Apparently Garrett has only been away for awhile and has returned to the City. So really it's the same continuity, things around the city have simply changed in his absence. There is no reason Garrett can't be played by Mr. Russell. It's all nonsense.

Yea agreed. The fact that Garrett's voice is an important part of his personality and that it is going to be a reboot shows that it needs to be done right from the base up then to ask another voice actor to fill in the role.

As much as I love Russell and the unique magic he brought... it is clear EM did not choose to go with him, otherwise they would have done so right from the early stages. You guys might be able to persuade EM to change their minds about the new actor... but they are happy with their choice.
Because of this... I've voted "It doesn't matter. "
That's because I personally look for other things that make a good game. Atmosphere, immersion, narrative, exploration etc etc.
I've enjoyed all the fan missions... some were even better than those in the official games.... and none of them were voiced by Russell. I'm glad I never refused to play them because of the voice actors. What would I have missed?

I've been trying to think about my skepticism about Thief 4 and I think it boils down to being afraid of the game being a generic AAA console game.
I actually think that I would be OK with no Stephen Russell, no hammerites nor pagans etc etc if I was confident that the game would be fore mature PC gamers. The fact that I'm not so sure about this makes me cringe about every change I hear about.
EDIT: Let's not forget they dropped Russell to be able to handle athletic motion capture and voice acting which probably means we will have hard scripted (third person) in-engine cinematics and quick time events that are not optional...

EM are releasing more info on the voice actor and the game very soon.
I'm just going to chill out about it now and wait for further news and sound clips.
Renzatic on 3/4/2013 at 14:51
One thing I'm just about definite won't happen will be the inclusion of quick time events. No one likes them, and only one or two companies use them on a regular basis.

Today's adventure in missing the point.
We would have loved to have used SR, but couldn't because we work for free and he was under contractual obligations and couldn't voice act for us. (And probably didn't have the time to work for free.)
FM authors work with what they have. It's not like we had a choice and could have used Stephen in any FMs. The fact that EM could have used him and didn't is what really stings here. I'd have understood if he was unavailable.
