And the relevance of this is...?
Obviously Eidos thinks enough people have heard of "Thief" to make it worth a reboot. If they didn't think the name was a draw, they wouldn't use it.

The relevance is that this isn't the target audience, it never has been, and it's beyond illogical to think it ever might have been.
From a business standpoint, the only reason it's got the Thief name printed on it is to get the existing Thief fanbase interested in it for a few extra free sales, while simultaneously introducing a new generation to their brand which might mean a few extra sales for the older titles too. Calling the game "Shadow" or some other dumb crap instead of throwing the Thief name on it is more likely to result in a lower income result. AAA game production is entirely about minimizing the risk of failure. That's why DLC is such a big part of AAA games now.

And if you want the practice of giving risk-minimization overbearing control over game design, you boycott it. I'm not touching Thief 4. I can't get hyped about it. It looks like it will have some authentic Thief gameplay, but with kung-fu, slow motion, and to top it off, with a poorly-worked blockbuster movie plot and grating voice acting.

Or, you acknowledge the fact that this is the only way content of this scale will ever be produced again and accept it for what it is. They're not going to make a Thief game that doesn't appeal to mass audiences, and if they did it would be horribly short and probably pretty ugly visually. The only way to financially justify super high quality visuals and lengthy campaigns is by making a game that appeals to more than a niche audience.

The road to mediocrity is paved with rationalisations.
While I would've liked a proper Thief game with cutscenes and voice acting and all that jazz, it's not a huge deal as long as there will still be FMs.

Don't count on modder accessibility, but count on DLC (they have already added a preorder map right?) and everything else you hate. And Godzilla, they could do that with style and originality, but they have been forced by their corporate bosses into making a generic, soulless game.

DarkRadiant and DromEd are perfectly accessible. Even the black sheep of the family has fan missions. I don't think we have to worry about running out of them.

I've been coming to this forum on and off for over 8 years, that doesn't mean it's a huge community.
I'll refer you to the portion of my post that said this community is only as obscure as Thief is, and that I never made any claims to its size, or to the size of its marketable audience. You, however, were not talking about Thief in the greater gaming community. You were talking about the developers of a Thief game, and the notion that we are obscure to them. You sounded as though that is rightly so, which is what I take issue with most of all.

All of that is probably true. I'm not sure if you're aware, but claims like that are generally impossible to prove.

Unfortunately, people under 20 make up an enormously significant portion of the gaming audience. Even in its time, Thief wasn't exactly a huge blockbuster success. It did well, and people knew of it, but it's always been a niche game.
Thief is a pretty obscure title in the modern consciousness
So if that is the case, and our deluded group is the least of EM's concerns, why the hell would they even make a Thief game?! You're making the perfect argument for making any game other than Thief!

Aaaaccctttuuuaaalllllyyy, the average age of your average gamer pegs out somewhere in the mid 30's these days. So most of the people who played Thief back in the day will likely be the same audience that plays Thief now.
The under 20 demographic? They're too busy social shaming people on Facebook to play games.
