Yep...It's unbelievable that they rejected him for a lesser artist...Plus, Benny and other new SR voiced characters will be lost forever...with part of the unique atmosphere never to be rediscovered without his vocal charm.

I know it's too late, but signed anyway.

I completely agree with Cigam, it's not Garrett without Stephen Russell.
This is biased fanboy-speak. Stephen Russell was great, but it's not impossible to replace him. Mark Hamill retired from voicing the Joker, do you hear anyone complaining about his replacement for Arkham Origins? Sam and Max have had between 3-5 actors a piece between their 5 video game appearances and their television show, and the one guy on the internet who refuses to accept anyone but the first set of actors in the role is widely considered to be a loon.
There's a huge difference between
preferring someone's portrayal of a character, and shrieking foolishly that no one can ever replace them.

In Thief, Garrett's distinctive voice is an integral part of the character, which is not the case in most other games.

I can't say that I agree that the voice acting is inconsequential in every other game series that exists.

No, but in Thief it's much more central than in other game series. Much, much more.

I don't think that's really true either.
Earl Boen voiced Lechuck (central villain of all 5 MI games) in Curse of Monkey Island, Escape From Monkey Island, and the special edition remakes of Secret and MI2, but people didn't outright inexplicably hate the guy who replaced him in Tales of Monkey Island episode 1 (Earl did later record the dialogue for that game, but the point is, many people enjoyed a new actor's take on a role that had been played exclusively by another actor in every other release in the franchise), and that was all in the same continuity. It makes even less sense to refuse to give the new guy a chance when it's a reboot of the franchise, imo.

What you don't seem to be understanding is - it
is true for most people here, even if it isn't for you. You can come up with as many historical gaming examples as you like, but you're missing the point. There's a reason a petition was started up and has been signed by thousands of people. The voice IS important to them.
You've made it clear that other things that are important to diehard Thief fans aren't important to you, such as contextual movement, leaning, jumping, etc. So maybe you just need to move on and be content with the fact that you're not a "fanboy" like most of the people who hang out on these boards. You know, these boards that honor the memory of Looking Glass Studios?
Because quite frankly, your arguments are getting tiresome. They just don't apply to the majority of folks who post here. And who are you to say that these opinions are wrong?

This.
Moreover, it's not only that they hired a new voice actor - if SR really couldn't do it, and they were forced to hire another actor, it would still suck but I'd live with it - but in this case the public reason for replacing him was that they needed a young fit actor to sync Garrett's lip movements with his body, which is absurd, they could have simply synced the lip movements with SR's voice, but then they give the excuse of "oh, it just wouldn't look natural". They knew how much SR meant to the established community, but they chose to replace him anyway (the real reason probably being they completely want to redo the game for entirely new players, and so flipping off and alienating the classic Thief fans is part of the process). Not to mention the disrespect they've shown us over the years (deleting mention of our petition on their forums, banning people for mentioning it, completely ignoring our opinions, etc.)
