Now that tomb raider looks very pretty, it's graphically stunning, it would be a really nice movie, but that's supposed to be a gameplay video from a fan who loves the game and I'm not seeing much in the way of gameplay.
I'm seeing lots of handholding, I'm seeing lots of "go here and press this", OK it's the intro and they are teaching the player what the controls do and where the visual cues are.
But I'm also seeing lots of extremely restricted choices in where the player can go and what they can do presumably because it wouldn't do to hurt the narrative.
I've been a Tomb Raider fan since the first game was released in '96 and afaic the TR reboot was frustrating in respects to how much of the game I was allowed to actually be in control. The graphics were stunning, granted, but the game was so dumbed down as to be insulting. It was almost as though the devs threw in fast-paced action sequences as a sop to the player - just before they yanked the controls away again for yet another cutscene or automatic take-down or escape scene, all the while inserting blatant 'go here and do this' instructions to make sure the player didn't get lost. There was no resemblance between TR reboot's Lara and the Lara that I've played all these many years; the reboot Lara was a wuss, her voice was 'off', and she did far too much groaning and grunting and whining, imo. Also noticeably lacking was the original TR music, which for me has long been iconic of the TR franchise. But it was the general dumbing-down of the game that I most despised; the lack of choices (as Esme said) that really irritated me. And as Esme said, (for me) TR reboot was more of a game to be watched rather than actually played. No thank you.
I kept thinking (worrying, actually) that TR reboot could be a sign of what T4 was going to become, that somehow this generation of game devs have got it in their collective minds that the TR reboot type of gameplay (or rather lack of it) is what the mass audience of gamers really want. Not this gamer. I've seen similarities already in certain disappointing aspects in TR reboot and T4 which I don't like at all. In trying to appeal to such a broad gamer audience I fear that EM is creating a trainwreck of a game; in essence, watering down the core elements of the original Thief games by including so many 'new' aspects in order to make the game appealing to CoD players as well as the type of gamer who loves games like Assassins Creed.
One thing I've been noticing is how early this 'dumbing down' trend seems to have started. TMA was released in 2000 and TDS was released in 2004. Imo that's when everything started going to hell in a handbasket. I'm noticing the same differences between Far Cry 1 (released in 2004) and Far Cry 2 (released in 2008). I really am hating this whole dumbing down trend.

Me too. Your points on TR are spot on. I tried playing it and after 30 minutes I gave up because the game kept taking the controls away to show me things I need to do or to play a movie to advance the plot. It was distracting and I was certainly not immersed.

I'd like to retract my poll vote and petition signature. I no longer want SR to have anything to do with this.

It's okay. Think of it this way: Thiaf doesn't have Garrett. It has Nugarrett.

I agree that at this point I'm rather glad SR isn't involved in T4, but I figure the petition is not only meant to indicate our extreme dissatisfaction to EM, but on the flip side it's a kind of a tribute to the man who pretty much invented the Garrett we all know and love. The latter is the only reason I wouldn't want to retract my support of said petition.

It essentially serves as a general statement of protest...reflecting the fundamental breakdown between EM and the THIEF community.

As a fundamental sentence, who does not distinguish the sounding of the quick from the... general... sound of the dead? This makes me weep from frustration, pull my clothes, spit with anger.

Even I'm impressed a bit. I wonder many are repeats. I'm sure there are a few people who repeatedly sign but even so, there must be loads of legit signatures.
I might even sign myself!
AFAIK, you can't do repeat signs, unless you maybe fake your ID. But the site is probably monitoring the adress of your internet connection in order to prevent repeat signings.

I see it similarly.

"Nugarrett" sounds like some expensive brand of Belgian nougat chocolate bars. :laff:
