I'd have to ponder that. I'd greatly prefer none at all. I'm thinking maybe something in the range of 10 seconds per hour of play time. I don't want something that's frequently reminding me that I'm playing a game by shifting to 3rd-person. Immersion is a huge factor for me. Why is it so hard for developers to give us an option to switch all of that off? Is it ego on their part or is there some technical reason we don't have that option?
Agreed. Despite the lack of SR and any new weirdness they add (focus, parkour, etc.), I really want to want this game. The amount of 3P will end up being the deciding factor for whether or not I purchase it. Immersion is the thing that has kept me playing for so many years. Breaking that immersion is the thing that will end it. I don't plan on fighting much if any, so that shouldn't be too bad. 3P for climbing could be a big issue. If I can play this new game the way I play the old ones, there is lots of climbing involved. I'm climbing; I shouldn't be able to see all around me. It should be risky. That is part of what makes it fun. I think using 3P for climbing sux. Please, please, please, let me turn off all 3P!

.....This isn't our Garrett. This isn't our City. I wish it were, but it's not. In a World that has something as bizarre as the Maw, why not some plane of existence that's slightly askew from the Thief world we know? That appeals to my imagination more than the thought that our Thief world has been supplanted by this new one. Yes, I know, that's strained rationalization, but it makes me better able to tolerate what's being done to our beloved Thief. It might even allow me to enjoy the new game.
Kind of like the 'new' Star Trek movies, maybe? Imagine the NuThief game takes place in an alternate reality where things are vaguely similar but just not quite the same. Yeah, I might be able do that. If only they'd get rid of the nasty 3rd person thing. I agree with pav; immersion is a big deal for me and as much as I basically liked the game (and yeah, Jensen's voice was a contributor to that :p ) even DX:HR screwed that up for me more than a few times.

... when maybe I want to swing the blackjack and walk away as the body falls, or look around and check something else out, look for changes in the world, just be organic and natural, not locked into someone else's agenda and idea of kewl. Same with lockpicking. Don't take away my vision of the world around me, lock me into another world-view, move my body into position for me, and never force me to have to hit another button to disengage before the lock is picked, or to change views for myself back to the eyes in my character's head. My time is my own. I'm not playing a game to watch a movie, especially the same ones over and over per mission.....
Well said indeed, jtr.

On the subject of 3rd person, I'll just say what I said during DE:HR development and that is...hybrid 1st / 3rd systems are fine as there is an option to play FULLY in 1st person with absolutely no 3rd person switching. I don't want a game deciding that I absolutely MUST see something cool. That's not why I play Thief.
So yeah. I'm perfectly happy with the devs doing there fancy Third person stuff, but make sure it can be completely switched off.
I really don't know why this isn't a no brainer for the devs. If they were really listening to what the fans were saying on the forums, then an option to completely disable 3rd person in any form would have been planned from the very beginning. Hopefully it was planned from the beginning and they just haven't told us yet.

That is a lot of signatures of protest, for sure.
I hope people will take time to send their personal "thank you" messages to Stephen too. :thumb:
EM will send it directly to Mr Russell. Thanks to Skaadi.

cough, Ultima IX, cough
Remember also, that not long after that petition, Origin fell on its own sword. Regardless, any true Ultima fanatic knows that IX *did* put the final stamp on the matter at hand.

Can we trust them not to edit out the parts where folks say EM made a mistake? lol

As skaadi requested, her idea is for messages of thanks and appreciation to Mr Russell only. I think we should respect that.
If there are messages with a different agenda, no doubt she will remove them herself.

All this serves to do is to create a psychological subtext of..."Thank you Mr. Russell for your past work with THIEF, your done now, so let this be a happy, farewell resolve"...Which of course is why Eidos is not censoring this, because in effect, it serves to counteract any unwanted pro-SR protest, with the accepting underlying resolve of "letting Stephen Russell go".

Can you define what you meant by 'agenda' please, because I'm not talking about people who might rave like lunatics in their message. Saying something along the lines of, 'I feel EM made a mistake not having you back, you will be missed', is a different way of expressing their appreciation. I certainly hope things like that
won't be censored because it's equally important that hears that people aren't just saying, "tough luck, seeya" and that they are actually hurting about this. I know I am.
